I was bitten by the 'sheep hunting' bug on my Alaska dall sheep hunt. I have a stone sheep hunt booked for 2013. I wanted to sneak in an inexpensive sheep hunt (if there is such a thing) this year and thought a mouflon/chamois hunt in Europe would be a good option. I went to the Dallas SCI show and spoke to a couple outfitters in Spain; I had a little sticker shock. I've hunted all over North America and Africa, but am new to hunting in Europe. Can any one recommend a country/outfitter for an affordable hunt? Or, is Spain a good indication of the cost of this type of hunt?

There are other countries such as Hungary, Bulgaria, Poland etc that would be worth looking up too.

Depends on what kind of hunting or "hunting" you wish to pursue...

I can recommend you to visit the Jagd und Hund show in Dortmund this year.

This will help you a lot to make the right decision.

I guess I should clarify. I live in Texas, so if I wanted to shoot a mouflon in a pasture - I could do that this weekend. I want a true free range hunt and I think that hunting an animal in its native environment (if possible)is the best way to go.

The best (Trophy and Number ) Free Range hunts for Mouflon are in Croatia and Hungary IMO. In Czech there are plenty Big ones behind the high fence. The trophy Mouflan Rams in Spain are quiet small compare to eastern european Mouflon.

Croatia.
Reasonable price & a view that can't be beat. Free ranging too.
Can add Balkan (I believe that's the subspecies found there) chamois as well to your hunt.

+1 for Czech! There are "some" free range there as well, just make sure you are sure clear with the outfitters.

Chamois would be my choice though... and Romania would be my destination.

Have fun!

Spain is acutally quite expensive when it comes to hunting.
You can do both (moufflon and chamois) in croatia. Austria would be another option. PM me if you need infos.

Edit: Arjun Reedy offered some hunts in France, this might be good option for you, too!

Mouflon - Croatian coast, Isles - great rocky terrain with beautiful views. Contact Tomo of this forums (Artemis):

Chamois - there are Chamois and then there are Chamois - for a "genuine" Chamois (IMO) only way to go is Alps - Austria, Slovenia, Italy, Switzerland, France and Germany (Bavarian Alps) - if possible do it in rut (November). With a pinch of snow...

You say Artemis is the "go to" contact for a Croatian mouflon/chamois combo?

I may seriously consider this for a mid to late '13 hunt. Take the wifey & make a vacation out of it.. beach laying on the Adriatic, Medditeranian cuisine, maybe some diving & snorkeling, sightseeing, etc. Sounds nice!

Artemis, if you see this, please PM me. I'd like to chat with you about this combo hunt..
Best dates, prices, schedules, etc.
Thank you.

If expected trophy size is of importance to you, the Czech Republic or Hungary are normally the places to go. Oh, and btw, the Czech Republic (also) has unfenced mouflon populations.

The Croatian hunt sounds like a great vacation in a lovely setting.

If you like mountain hunts for mouflon, the French National Forests (ONF) offer hunts for mouflon in the French Alps. I know of at least a couple of AR member who have hunted this way - although possibly for chamois as opposed to mouflon. This is supposedly a traditional European mountain hunt with respect to how you move about the hunting area (on foot) and how you get your quarry out after the deed (on your back - although it is possible to hire a "packer" to help with this chore). This is supposedly a nice and reasonably priced hunt - although I have never done it myself.

Sometimes it's about hunting new places and seeing new areas.. Not just about killing another animal.
I can go to TX and shoot a mouflon tomorrow. But it wouldn't be nearly the same as traveling to Europe and hunting.

Besides, the TRULY PURE mouflon sheep on Hawai'i island were exterminated to make way for the Volcanoes National Park. Those were pure mouflon sheep and had the look, ie. classic horn configuration, pelage coloration and body weight. The mouflon on Lana'i Island may be listed as pure, but they certainly do not have the look of pure mouflon.

I will pass on those and continue my search in a European destination.

100 % Agreed. Traveling, new countryside and new people is half the fun.

Try gregor (mentioned above). Another excellent outfitter for mouflon is this guy. http://www.dalmacijalov.com/eng/contact.html

A question..
Are the Croatian coastal hunts known for their "sliding scale" pay? Sliding scale being the larger the trophy, the more $$ you pay.

I know most of Spain and Czech is, but am unsure about this one.

I also 100% agree. If an AR-group goes, I would definitely be interested in participating. If I'm only going after mouflon, when is the best time of year to go?

www.diana.dk is a good source for wild mouflon and chamois in Europe.

Chamois in Europe are 1/3rd the going rate they are in New Zealand or Spain.

You should be able to do both hunts for $6500.

Problem on mouflon is that they grow so slowly. A trophy ram is going to be at least 8-12 years old. In some countries they won't even shoot them until then.

A lot of folks in Texas are shooting rams that are 4 years old because they have some good genetics down there. But a real trophy ram of somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 inches will still be $3000-5000. Talk to Ricky Hunt, he's a mouflon rancher.

My personal choice would be Austria, but the mouflon will be smaller. Or hunt chamois in Austria and then switch to Hungary or the Czech Republic for the Mouflon.

I'd try and take a european badger and a fox if they let you. But ask before hand. European red foxes are huge. A winter one would have a beautiful skin.

I've been hankering after a Mouflon for some years now and the hunt in the FNF is to my mind the only hunt in Europe that is close to a traditional mountain hunt.

I will put my hands up to not knowing a whole heap about the Balkan options but I did look round some of the Serbian hunting options and drove round the hunting areas, (far cheaper than some other neighbouring countries). It looks like a bit more of a forestry hunt rather than a mountain sheep hunt from what I saw.

For the record, I don't book either hunt as I have not done them myself so will not sell them, but I know people that have and would be happy to provide a contact for the FNF hunt. I think it is an Oct/Nov hunt IIRC, and we were meeting in Gap in the southern Alps.

If you do decide to go and want a hunting buddy then let me know as it could be fun.

Rgds,
Kiri

Also some good Free range Mouflon hunts in Slovakia. Hard to find a commercial operator there, but if you have local contacts, there are possibilities.

Hi all,

I just made an enquiry about the possibility of a Mouflon Hunt in the French Alps, and it seems that won't work at present. Apparently there was a population of wolves released into the area 4-5 years ago and they have hammered the sheep populations to the point where last season there was virtually no permits issued in that area.

I can see what my Serbian operator would be interested in doing for us if you want to chalk something up as a cheap exploratory hunt?

K

I too vote for Croatia. I have hunted twice with Tomo (Artemus Hunting). And I hope to make a third trip with him in the near future. He is one of the hardest working outfitters I have hunted with. He wants to make sure you (and your wife) have a good time. And Croatia is a great hunting trip for couples. Cause the coast is so close to some good hunting. Tomo set us to stay a few days pre hunt on the Island of Pag. Were were there mid September, the water was still warm enough to go for a swim.

There are lots of countries in Europe you can hunt free range Mouflon.

The largest trophies are to be found in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
It takes minimum 7 years for a ram to reach medal class if that is what you want.

Besides these 2 countries, you should consider Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia.
Turkey also have great Mouflon hunting.

Many consider Croatia to be the best destination for free range Mouflon hunting.
It is also possible to combine the Mouflon hunting there with Balkan Chamois, European Red Deer, European Brown Bear, Wild Boar and European Roe Deer.

Sweden also have a small free range huntable Mouflon population.

I hope to hunt a free range Mouflon ram with a bow one daySmiler

Here is a nice one I shot in the Czech Rep back in 2003. A really nice hunt on an open and hilly/broken territory, but if I hunt Mouflon again I would like to do it as a full mountain hunt.
