Howdy, I applied for a job in Germany and will be working for US Defense Dept. If you go through the training get your Jagdschein and are legal to hunt, how does the hunting program work at Grafenwoer? Is it a annual lease? Any driven hunting? What are some of the prices of the leases, and what are the going rates of game?

G-R-A-F-E-N-W-O-H-R If the position you have applied for entitles you to a US Military I.D. Card, then you are eligible to participate in the US Forces Hunter Training Scheme. Various requirements apply; such as Police Background checks to apply for the Training initially, also. Takes @ 2 months and much-o less cash layout than what a German native would pay. You receive a German Jagdschein at the end of successful completion of the Training. There are many local & regional hunting opportunity schemes for the Grafenwohr hunters, too. You'll have to make yourself smart on what their personal benefits may/could be. Courses are offered (don't quote me) @ 1-2 times anually. Cheers, Number 10

Thank you Macs B, Martin, and Gerry, I am hopeful to get hired, but I might miss their timeline with my own retirement. How much was the Red Deer Class 1A hunt?

MOA, You don't want to know ..... break-in with lesser stags; works better on the pocketbook. Macs-B one of our extra-special residential experts; trust what he says. Cheers, Number 10

BTW: your spelling was correct. Grafenwöhr is spelled with an "Umlaut", i.e. oe in English. But then, for the Americans things are always different ;-) Good luck and lots of Weidmannsheil!

All, I concur, we should be sitting well enough when we get there for me to be able to hopefully afford a 5-7 Kilo stag every year. I have a long time Austrian friend that runs a reh/schwarz revier in Tyrol, and he told me he could find me some very reasonable priced gams, and hopefully some day a steinbuck and wisent. After a life time in the military living all over the world and hunting on 5 continents while I love meat, I enjoy horns all the better. That being said I am very excited to be stalking roe bucks again.

If you plan to stay for several years, make an effort, do yourself a favour and learn the language. Teutonic for native English speakers is not so difficult. Then you can quite easily apply for a hunting area with the State Forest administration. Probably not on Hohenfels or Grafenwöhr which also for us common German hunters is close to impossible but on areas with roe and wild boar at least. You can also apply for "weekly licenses" with the State Forests of the "Länder", they are at least in the East quite easy to obtain and offer sometimes very good hunting at very affordable prices.

On a related note, has anyone done any hunting near Munich/Garmisch?? I teach at the NATO School in O'gau regularly and have an EU Firearms Passport for my guns. I can't even find a skeet range nearby... Thanks! H. Cole Stage III, FRGS ISC(PJ), USN (Ret) "You do not have a right to an opinion. MOA, Graf is nice place to be, I'll add don't delay getting your Jagdschein as soon as you can. Also, don't forget you won't be far from Czech to experience some excellent hunting. Bwana, I have hunted Gams north of Mittenwald (Karwendelgebirge), but many years ago (early 90's). A mighty fine hunt and would recommend it, beautiful. If you are ok with German, I'd start with the Bayerische Jagdverband and Garmish Jagd community (become a member) and find out when and where they meet and go and introduce yourself. Bayern dropped out of the German Deutsche Jagdschutzverband (DJV), they are on their own, but a couple links you may want to check out. The Jagdnetz link covers a lot of hunting in Germany with the other DJV State Hunting Organizations, Waidmannsheil, Dom. Bayerische Jagdverband GAP JAGDNETZ -------- There are those who only reload so they can shoot, and then there are those who only shoot so they can reload. I belong to the first group. There are still chamois in the Mittenwalder Karwendelmassiv, however due to a restructuring the Forstbetrieb Mittenwald no longer exists, the area is taken care from Forstbetrieb Bad Tölz Hindenburgstraße 30 83646 Bad Tölz Forstbetriebsleiter: Rudolf Plochmann Stellvertreter: Robert Krebs Telefon: +49 (8041) 7649-0 For the Garmisch area, the Forstbetrieb Oberammergau is in charge now. You can google the contact data. If you want to book a chamois hunt withe the Landesforst for summer or fall 2012, apply in January or latest February. If you don't shoot a trophy but a yearling, this costs little money and is a great experience. Another fine Forstbetrieb by the way and in a beautiful area near the Königsee is Berchtesgaden.

Look here: http://www.schiessen-wirnhier.de/ At the old olympic shooting range from 1972, you can shoot skeet and trap. Owner of the complet range is the bavarian shooting assosiation (BSSB), but the skeet and trap range is operated by the Wirnhier GmbH. Conny Wirnhier was an olympic winner in the past. Martin
