I have a Blaser Stutzen K 95 in 308. It is one of the most accurate hunting rifles I have ever fired. The "problem" is, the case I have for it has a place for another barrel and scope. That makes me nervous. So should I get another bbl to fill the gap. If so, what calibre?. I would not want anything smaller than the 308. That bbl is 20 inches long. I would want a longer octagon bbl in a calibre [more?] suitable for bigger game at longer range. So what calibre? It should be obtainable in the good old USA. The 300 Win Mag comes to mind, but really, even at 400 yards there is not that much difference in ballistics. [Look at the charts] Should I go with the 9,3x74R and shoot 232 to 250 grain bullets for big stuff at long range? I love the rifle in 308, is there really a need for "more" power. I plan on using this rifle for my goat, with the possibility of a black bear or a grizzly bear, on the same hunt and when I do a sheep hunt. What do ya'll think. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

If recoil isn't a consideration, how about a .338 Win Mag? Somewhat superior in all respects to the 308. But hell! It's going to kick in a 2.7kg rifle! Cheers, Dave. Non Illegitium Carborundum Cheers, Dave. Aut Inveniam Viam aut Faciam.

I do not think they make a 338 bbl. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

Quite right! They don't! But they do list an 8x68S, which has similar performance. But will probably be hard to find in the USA. You could go for the 9.3x74R, it has similar ballistics to the 35Whelen. Cheers, Dave. Non Illegitium Carborundum Cheers, Dave. Aut Inveniam Viam aut Faciam.

AS much as I like the 9,3x74R [I have it in a double rifle] it does not have a better trajectory than the 308. I think my choice would have to be either a 7MM Mag or a 300 Win Mag, or 300 WBY Mag. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

I thought you killed off the 7mm and 300 mags in your opening statement? It seems to me, you already have an adequate round for the uses you described. But, if pushed to suggest one, I would go with the 7mm Mag. Recoil shouldn't be much worse, ballistics are a bit better, it carries energy to distance very well (especially in the 160gr loads) and is, of course, readily available worldwide. If, however, you wanted the best ballistics you could get out of that rifle, in a round readily available in the USA (not quite so worldwide as the 7mm Mag) go the 300 Weatherby. It is significantly betters either the 308 or the 7mm Mag. Almost the equal of the 338. Not quite as good as the 8x68S, but probably a lot easier to find in the USA. Cheers, Dave. I would go with the .300 WBY, 8*68S,or the 8*75RS. They are all pretty close ballistically, for ease of ammo stateside I would say .3000 Weatherby Aleko Hits count, misses don't

Well i have a K95 in 8x68S with Magnaport. Great cartridge but in that light gun a puncher like Mike Tyson. But if i were you i would not take a barrel with Magnaport because it is too noisy! But the combination is very accurate and powerfull.

Gentlemen, Thanks for the advice. Probably the best choice for an increase in power over a 308 for the game you should hunt with a single shot woluld be a 300 Mag, for a hunter in the US. I do like the thougfht of the 8x75R, but since I have 2 Blaser R 93 bbls in 300 Win Mag that is the most logical choice. Safarischorsch I have a 300 Win Mag bbl with Magna-Port. In the field I do not find it any louder that my normal 300 Win Mag bbl. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY
