February, Åre Sweden: what to hunt?

So, the family have booked a skiing trip to Åre in February 2016. Never been to Sweden before and unfamiliar with the m.o over there. Had a look on the interweb and it appears that choices are limited in Feb due to seasons and snowcover. However some tips from those familiar with Sweden would be much appreciated re what (if anything) can be hunted over there at that time of year, what to avoid -clearly, being eaten by a pack of Wolves is top of this list- who to use in terms of agents, are there any must see gun or outdoors shops etc etc. All and any info would be very much appreciated.

Cheers

G

Februari is the time for grousehunting on skies. Its a very nice hunt its more like deerstalking in beuthiful winter mountains shooting white grouse with .22rl rifle or shotgun(my brother use his pointing dog for this hunt too it dont look so english).
I came back from trekking/hiking close to Åre this week.

Beware of drunk Stockholm citizens!

The Lundhags shop in Järpen has good outdoors stuff, boots and packpacks.

That sounds good. How difficult is it to learn to use cross country skis with no prior ski experience?? Is it at all possible.

It would take several days to lern backcountryskiing without experience mountains is adding the difficulties.Do you have experience in downhill skiing?
Snoeshoes is possible to use too they are easyer to learn but you cover less distance. In the mountains you may apply for using a snowmobile too get close too the hunting area.

Thanks N2. That really tells me what I need to know. It looks like a very absorbing sport in it's own right.

Are there other options than Grouse/Caper in February? Do I get the impression that Boar are still in season or have I read that incorrectly?

Boar are in season but they are in the southern Sweden. In Jämtland/Åre you have fox, hare and grouse its really low season for hunting in februari. You can always get a Famous in the bar they are always in season and nice and smooth.

Understood! I'm not sure I can bring myself to drink Grouse though... Ah well, at least I can do my homework for a return trip at the correct time of year with a rifle.

Have a nice skiing holiday with your wife and children so you can do a proper hunting trip next time.

Grouse and capercaillie hunting season starts in two weeks and moose hunting in September.
