Ok you lot, anyone have any info or an opinion on this topical subject. I.e. why the 1700 limit was set what it was based on, whether it has any scientific basis and what sort of impact does it have on the practicalities of our sport now?

This rule I think was introduced to eliminate underpowered rounds from deer stalking which would otherwise pass the 6mm and 100gr rules.

This effectively prevents the use of pistol rounds in lever action carbines, also some of the old American rifle rounds wich were badly underpowered such as 25/20 and 32/20.

It also renders illegal classic rounds such as 6.5x54 and the 30/30 in standard factory loadings.

In terms of any scientific basis, the rough rule of thumb for a clean kill is that a round needs to deliver 1000ft/lb into the target. A round which generates a minimum 1700 at the muzzle will still carry 1000 out to 300 yards plus.
