Ok, finally got all 10 hinds. It took a few weeks, but we got them. I also got 20 Axis deer in this weekend(no pictures, sorry). 9 does and 11 bucks of different ages. Yearlings all the way up to a nice 4 yr old.

Unfortunately all the bucks were in velvet and the capture broke and damaged their antlers. It will be next year before I see what I have. No problem because I can't find any of my deer now anyway!

Out of 30 new deer, you would figure I could find a few of them right? I guess my place is thicker and rougher than I thought. It will be a good hunting area.

Thanks to all of you for your advice.

Welcome home ladies!

Good info, thanks guys.

I have 1000 acres under fence. Rough canyons and draws. 2 lakes or "stock tanks" as we call them in Texas.

I will supplement their diet with free choice protein feed in 2000# feeders. It will be a hunting operation.

My wife is staring at me now with the "let's go look!"

I will finish this on Monday.

Thanks.

1000 acres - no problem and no need to separate. A dominant stag will take charge of the herd and the others will remain on the periphery. The dominant stag will root and fight and the others just fight, so he may be surplanted.Depends on antler and also body size.

A dominant stag will tolerate a spiker or yearling.

You should not run elk (wapiti) and red deer together as they will cross-breed which is a shame. NZ deer farmers bred the two together to increase the body size and antler size of reds but in the wild any cross-breeds should be killed off.

If its hunting I hope they aren't fed off the back of trucks otherwise they will be a bit tame.

Red deer are majestic beasts.

PS I could tell you a secret supplement that I believe helps aid fantastic antler growth but then it won't be a secret . My four year olds are already bigger and better than the 6 year old breeding stag.
