I will be taking an African friend out for roe this rut. Shots will be in the woodland and at roe bucks no further than 75yards away. Quite understandably he will be using his own rifle which is a 270. Are there any milder factory loads? I'm a bit worried what a 270 is going to do to a roe buck that is quite likely to be front on (having been called) and at very short range.

I don't know of any mild loads other than to make one up, but I'd use 150 grainers and wait for a broadside shot or don't shoot. I personally haven't heard of calling this early in the season, but if that's the case, and someone else is calling, if they sat 20 meters behind, that might work better to get a broadside shot. What type of calling will you do? Waidmannsheil, Dom. -------- There are those who only reload so they can shoot, and then there are those who only shoot so they can reload. Would agree with Dom. Most of the factory 130's are very soft. I found the Winchester Supreme silvertips in 140gr to be very explosive also. I would go with the toughest 150's I could find, maybe Norma. I would stay away from the Federal RN 150's also if I could. I used to be able to get 130gr RWS which were excellent, I haven't seen them for years. This is why I got into reloading for the 270win. Factory ammo in the Uk is generally crap. Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they are not out to get you....

A .270 is indeed a tad much for roe. On the other hand, when I think of the number of roes taken every year with calibers such as 7x64, then a .270 is not going to be that out of place. Stay with a 150 grs load, if your friend's rifle will shoot them. Try not to hit bone. - mike ********************* The rifle is a noble weapon... '94 Jon2 rates 130 SSTs out of his 270 WSM. He's been impressed with how they seem to hold together and has shot several deer with them. He also uses 140 Accubonds with good results. Reagrds, Tim

I'm with Tim on this one, but just to add it has to be a premium bullet such as nosler partition, accubond or trophy bonded, they will give far less damage than any of the other run of the mill factory loaded rounds... regards griff p.s 1894 are you aware of Pete's little indiscretion with a fox!

This is by way of advance planning - the calling will take place late July!

Thanks 1894, yes, my misread!! I am hesitant to take ANY headon shots. Usually if your just a bit patient you can at least get some angle on 'em, WH Dom. -------- There are those who only reload so they can shoot, and then there are those who only shoot so they can reload. I shoot mostly the 130 grs. Partitions in my .270 Win. That's for sure more than plenty enough for roe buck, as many trophies I have harvested with it would confirm...... By the way..... it is also enoug for the big red stag we have.... shoulder shots with a Partition is a medicine which they absolutely dislike and quit with mostly sudden death

Absolutely. Especially if you have to gut them and want to eat them yourself. If they are REAL close and don't move I might be tempted to go for a low neck shot.

The difference twixt 243 and 270. With a 243 and normal bullet, the bullet enters the stomach but doesn't exit. All there is is a tiny hole and literaly no leakage.
