It is relatively simple. This method is used for driven hunts. Lay a rope about 50 cm high from the ground. At a distance of one meter from each other link flags, usually red. Wolves will not pass this line, will go along with it, trying to avoid. At the end of the rope well camouflaged hunters wait for the wolves archer .
I will search for some picture for you.
I hope you understand a little of what I mean Smiler

That looks like a great method!! I've never heard of it being tried in Canada...it will now! I wonder how it would work for cougars, they are almost impossible to hunt without dogs.

thanks for sharing!

Somehow, I think the size of Canadian wildlands would put the kibosh on this idea. Big Grin That "wolf" looks like they did him a favor by putting him out of his misery. dancing As Croc Dundee would say, now This is a wolf. Big Grin

Grizz, I was wondering if you'd see this one!

I'm wondering how we can get a line of flags about 5 miles long and some "beaters" to chase them to us.

Seems like a lot more work, than sitting in the bush with a predator call. Big Grin

Gentlemen I hope you do not believe that hunting wolves with flags is a easy hunt. If you do not use the land, the wind and you do not know the behavior of wolves than you can use a rope with flags not for 5 miles, but 50 miles and you will not shoot the wolf. Wolf is the smartest and therefore most difficult animal shot.
Ps:Good luck londonhunter and do not worry, Russians are very experienced in hunting with flags.

I agree
In fact the hardest job is the forester

I am told that this hunt will have about 80 "noisemakers"

The 3 chief foresters knows by now how many pairs are within certain sectors

They have been baiting since early October

There are only 6 guns

There are at the moment 4 possible locations and they are going to decide which forest to shoot only the day before the hunt depending on condition on the ground and tracks

I prefer to beat but with a drilling in my hand with angry things charging ...

If the hunting area have brown bears too, than the bait goes to bears not to the wolves Wink.

What you say is spot on

As you know bear season finished last month and there are plenty around in the area.

If I see any I can only take pictures and wave at them ....

This season 23 bears were taken in total with licence and 02 with export cities.

What kind of animal is that? Confused

Definitely not world class taxidermy, whatever it is.

I'm not really sure but I think I am the only romanian outfitter that organized hunting of wolves with flags.
Months in which hunting is so organized very often are January and February. Wolves have very large territories where they hunt and they visit that areas more regularly because the cold winter and lack of food. But in the months of November and December wolves do not travel so much. A good rangers will know where to find the wolves in these months. March is a very good month for hunting wolves over the bait, but bait is a female dog during mating. One thing interesting about this hunt is that after the wolf mate with the female dog, he will kill and eat her. Big Grin

x2. I was wondering if those were adults, or immature. Seem pretty small, by our standards . Mature adult here, averages 100 to 120 Lbs, whatever that translates into Kilos. Big Grin I'm also curious what kind of color variations you get. This one's black, fading to gray, with a light brown V, on his back.

Romanian wolves weight around 50 kilos. The biggest wolf that I shoot was 74 kilos and 99.9999 of them are grey.

Here is another picture not very aesthetic, but the size of the wolf is seen easy.

Wolfes and drive hunting - a very impressive hunt.

What would be the best rifle or combo?

My vote - a drilling.

Sounds like they are basically about the same size, as ours, though black variations are fairly common. Haven't seen a white one yet, but I've been told there are some.

Sorry if I'm diverging, but I've got to ask. Big Grin What's the function of that circular tank, with that bunch of hoses attached?

Two possibilities, either a semi-automatic slibovitz filling station or just regular auto-gas, a propane-butane mixture for gasoline engines.

I think that there is a heater attachet to the rubber tube. Look near the blue cylinder (it seems to be a shock absorber) under the bottle, there is a rusted cylinder attache to a rusted tube that is attached to the flexible rubber tube.
Or am I wrong?
But if you use with the word slibovitz for SLIVOWITZA WELL, I like your hypotesis more than mine jumping animal

I will vote for the auto-gas. Practical, economical, but more boring than slivowitz!

Don't French wolves simply surrender when they see a strange flag?

you will need all your patience and warm clothing and boots.

btw there is no need in 80 beaters - one or two could be enough....depends on the terrain and and square of the flagged area

good luck
