Guys - I get to hunt Norway/Sweden often enough that I am thinking of purchasing a radio for hunting. In the countries mentioned, there seem to be two main frequency bands in use. The result being that anyone turning up to a hunt can tune their radio and communicate. For Moose hunting etc, this can be vital to ensure that quota etc is not exceeded. I already possess a couple cheap VHF PMR systems - but these are NOT what is needed for group hunting in Scandinavia. Information please, frequency ranges used, models recommended and prices. Many Thanks Ian

I don't know anything about the available radios in Sweden, but just thought I'd offer one bit of advice. Whatever radios you and your buddies settle on, if you get the so-called "FRS" system, MAKE SURE you get radios where you can turn off the "Roger beep" feature. This is a beep that automatically occurs when you let your thumb off the talk button, to let the person on the other end know that you're finished talking. But the beep is so loud and unnatural sounding, that I'm sure every animal in a 10 mile radius can hear it!!! I have radios that I can turn off the Roger beep. My buddies don't. So I'm always subjected to that damned noise whenever we're out hunting!!!

Hi IanF I can help for sweden at least but I think it's the same for norway. You have 2 different band's to choose 155 or 31 check wich is used where you hunt. I prefer and use 155. Most radios are ok. The moore you pay the more functions and smaller in size they are. Hunter, Maxon, Lafayette, Icom are just some examples. Prices range from 185 to aobut 300. Where in sweden do you hunt ? If you want I can get some links but they would all be in swedish so I'm not sure it is any help. Good luck Mikael

The the 31MHz and the 155MHz are incompatible and your choice depends on what your hunting buddies use. If you're unsure of if you need both, I recommend Zodiac's 31-155 combo (two interchangeable radio units, one battry pack, one charger etc). My favourite dealer in these issues is Torsbo Handels and they can be reached at +46 (0)321 74040. Make sure you get yourself a battery pack for AA/LR6 batteries as well.

Guys Many thanks for the info - I will follow the suggestions - was thinking of a combi unit as I have already encountered the problems that can occur. Hunting throughout Sweden with a friend who runs an agency out of Malmo - likewise, in Norway, I have buddys in both Haugesund and Oslo areas, so tend to roam around depending on what we are hunting. Check that they use the same frequencies in Norway. Frequecy spans are well regulated, we don't want our radios to interfere with ambulance radios or things like that. Maybe they use something other than 155 or 31 in Norway. Check that out when you call Torsbo Handels!
