I've been dreaming of a big red stag for years, but I've never managed to "crack the code". Until yesterday that is Smiler

We've had full moon and rutting stags for some days, and I've been out quite much. And yesterday evening it finally paid of.

The antlers had 11 tines "only", but lot's of mass and character. I couldn't be more happy.
He entered a field with a short grunt. The wind was whirling around and I was afraid he would go. I had to wait for a couple of long minutes for him to clear some branches, but when he did I was quick to put in a shoot. He went 60 meters before piling up.

Recently got my stag back from the taxidermist. The pictures doesn't do it justice. It went into the silver medal category, quite close to gold.. Smiler

Bloody good show done Anders, that's beauty of a stag and well deserved by the sound of it.

How will have it mounted?

Not quite sure, Amir!
I did skin it for a shoulder mount. I already have to much stuff at the taxidermist, so don't if I can afford another animal at the moment Smiler
I think I'll keep the cape in the freezer, and just do a euro mount.
Maybe in a year or two I'll mount it.

Did an unofficial scoring today. Maybe I got this measurements wrong, but it scores a good bronze at the moment Smiler

Thanks for kind remarks everyone!

I agree! Smiler
I've more or less decided to mount it. Measured it again and discovered some mistakes that I made on the first attempt. Now it scores even higher. Silver, clooooose to gold Smiler

Here's another photo.

I keep coming back to this thread to admire those antlers. I really like the thickness and dark color of them.

congratulations.

Gorgeous animal, I'd go with a classic Euro mount on that one. Saves some money and has a timeless element to it, you'll feel like royalty with that in the house.

Congrats Anders on a fantastic stag! tu2

We've got a small population of red deer in our terrain, I'm hoping it's not too long before we have a huntable population Cool

I'd be surprised if you didn't find the time to have a crack at something!

Zilch on Sunday and this morning. All the remaining bucks are lying low in deep cover until the end of this month. On the 1st November they will all emerge and trot about openly whilst the Does lay up.

The taxidermist has done it justice. What a beautiful stag. Nice dark antlers and a classic shape. So much nicer than a mass of tiny points from a farmed stag!

So true, Kiri! Can't build big enough, and since Sandra just caught the bug as well, I'm in for trouble Smiler

Haven't got the CWD actually. But I've been talking to the taxidermist, and he's got them now. He's had them for a while. Hope I get them soon. Smiler

Anders,

Don't listen to Dig!!

She might cost you a bit more in trophy fees but just think how easy it will be to convince her the it is time to go hunting!

Say hi to Sandra from me.
