Dig called last night adn apprently the Mayfly is a bit late in the wilts/somerset chalk streams, however he did manage one.

It looks like there might be an outing scheduled for next week, but I thought I would check in to see if anyone has been trout fishing or had an early salmon.

I spoke to the guys on the Moy yesterday and they tell me the river is very low, so I'm keeping an eye out for the first bit of rain as I'd expect a decent run of fish if we get a bit of a flood.

23 pound brown taken on the Corrib last weekend. Not by me, biggest brown in Ireland for 100 years.

One of the lads from work had a 6 lb brown on the spent gnat on Sheelin last night.

Seems to be going well here, I will be on Erne this weekend.

Bumped into a friend whilst walking up to the Hermitage near Dunkeld last Sunday. He and his brother were on their annual may time trout fishing trip - on the preceding four days they had each caught four or five 2 to 3lb plus wild brownies per day. To say I was jealous was an understatement!

Well my trout fishing got put on hold due to reports of decent bags of black bream being caught in Sussex.

Boat booked for Monday.

Guys some pictures of the brown trout would be great.

Nige and myself were out on Erne at the weekend. Turned cold with an east wind, there were no fish on the surface at all.

Put the rapala's out and trolled around. We picked up half a dozen small pike in the 3-7 pound range. Nige then hit this lovely trout, well out in deep water. About four pounds, but by my reckoning, this is a young Ferox. The colouring and Kiep on the jaw are not at all typical of Erne trout in the spring..

I have heard great reports about big fish coming up to the fly on Sheelin, but that seems to be finished now for the season.

We had the usual later afternoon lunch on my favourite island. Fishing is not just about catching fish...

Nice pics mate,

We were afloat yesterday and managed a good bag of fish including a plaice of just under two pounds for myself which was a result. We had bream too which were really good fun on light tackle.

Dig has the pics, so I'll see if I can get a few posted.

By the way I see it is tough to separate an Irish man from his sausages at breakfast time regardless of location!! Wink

Sorry I missed your call the other day, but when you called I had a 7lb pike on a #7 weight flyrod which was a bit of a handful.

Trolling rapala's behind a flyrod is a bit naughty, but great crack.

The sausages were delish by the way.

Why is it that tea in the house is never as nice as tea made from lake water in a Kelly kettle?? Big Grin

that's a really nice Coal fish Donner. What sort of gear are you using for those fish? I like to use light tackle on the wrecks but it does mean that I tend to lose the bigger Cod as I can't stop them from getting into the wreck on those first few winds of the reel.

Thanks for sharing.

Hi Dave,

Yep it was fun, especially as I was using a light spinning rod all day pretty much. The sea was a bit lumpy in the morning and I think a couple of boats actually went back into the marina as their crews weren't up to it. We went and sheltered under the cliffs and had a great day. None of the other boats got into the bream but we had a bout 20 in total and probably 30+ plaice. A fair few smaller fish went back in.

We need to put a date in the diary and go get some Coddies or Bream. Amir and Bog are keen too subject to dates.

Yep, keep me posted.
Just the thought of Dabs fried in butter makes my mouth water.
A few Cod would square it with 'Er indoors and a dozen Mackerel would be the icing on the cake.

Not surprising the way the french and spanish pair trawlers scoop up everything right up to the 6 mile zone.

Jools,

We were probably less than a mile offshore last week and had two beam trawlers working inside us for most of the day.

Then to cap it off we got snide remarks from another skipper for the fact that we kept 4 bream each and 4-5 sizeable plaice...

We can still catch cod and pollack in the 20lb+ range but they are becoming less and less common.

Is it any wonder they were there. At least they were out of english habours. You could bet the foreign pair trawlers would have stripped the place clean if they had been allowed in. Under size, over quota or not.

If you allow the over exploitation of any fishery by foreign boats you have to expect decent size fish to become rarer. The Icelanders showed us that 40 years ago.

It is a bit of an urban myth though that our waters are being plundereded by foreign boats. The reality is that many English boats willingly sold out their quotas when they were first issued 20+ years ago. Since then the demand for fish has grown and can now make for a viable business, yet they conveniently forget the quick cheque they cased back then.

Combine that with modern methods, poor legislation for discarded over catch and politicians that don't understand the industry and we are never going to win this one.

The reality is that if the British boats had not sold out they would be doing just as much damage to the inshore waters as the continental boats are doing now. Without a major rethink of protected areas and species quota, not to mention sorting out the discard issue then the British fisheries will continue to decline rapidly.

Its no myth urban or not. For whatever the reasons might be.

Discard is a result of the current system. I doubt we have ever had a polictian that has understood any of our fishery industry.

Unfortunately we are left where it is the unregulated foreign boats that are doing the large proportion of the damage.

Like I said the Icelanders had the right idea 50 years ago. We should have followed their lead 20 years ago.

Hey Donner,

What are the coalfish like to eat?

I really enjoy catching pollack as I think they are a great sport fish, but I really don't enjoy eating them so I tend to avoid fishing for them as they will ultimately go to waste. Cod on the other hand never goes to waste!!

Hey Donner,

I can feel a plan coming on!! My only limit at the moment is time, but a weekend in Norway is always a welcome distaction.

Tell me, do you get into any of the Red fish, or wolf fish? It has always been an ambition of mine to try for those two species.

Rgds,
Kiri

The wrecks have been very quiet round here so far. May & June is always a tricky time as there can be a lot of algae in the water making lure fishing nigh on impossible. July is looking full already.

I will have to check the travel planner as I've just had another fortnight in August put in for Africa so I need to be careful not to upset the better half!! Perhaps the week after the game fair could be an option?
