Gentlemen, Please bear with me as this is not strictly hunting related. I need a favour from a Spanish or Spain-based member to help a friend out getting some knife steel. He was an RFD over here in Blighty but moved to Spain to get away from the rain ( He was a Northerner) and now is making knives in his little forge on his farm. He's having to get steel shipped in from the US at exorbitant cost once shipping and customs duties are added, he paid over 30 euros in tax on a small box of 30cm W2 steel blanks! He had to as he can't find anyone in Spain and a guy in England wanted to sell him a minimum of a 90cmx200cm sheet... He has only recently moved out there and his Spanish isn't the best.If anyone knows of a source of knife making or tool steels ( like W2, 01, 1070, 1084, and 1095, simple carbon tools steels in the main.) I would be very grateful if you could let me know. He has promised to make me a Pondequero style boar hunting knife if I can help him get the steel. A problem is finding a supplier who can supply small enough quantities and ideally cut it into useful lengths, like 5cmx30cm or 10x50 etc. With thanks, Amir

The high tech steels require careful control of time and temperature .Therefore 440C,CPM154, ATS-34, VG-10 and similar could never be HT'd properly on a little forge. Stick to W2, O1, 5160 ,1070, 1080, 1084. They do make steel in Europe !! There are knife making forums in UK and others . You could try www.brisa.fi who is specifically a knife makers supply. I don't know about Spain .This post should be in the knife section. I'll follow the thread and if you get stuck I'll track down some sources www.cuchillosartesanales.es www.britishblades.com

There are literally dozens of steel stockholder businesses to be found via a decent internet search. Most will happily supply product cut to size. Let your fingers do the walking...........

Bernie runs a very good site with lots of international contributors. If the isn't a local I'm sure theres an expat on there who knows where to source stock from.

Thank you mete, the main problem is that neither of us speak Spanish or we'd just ring around. You're right about the stainless supersteels, just the carbon ones would be great. I'll crosspost to the knife forum. Regards, Amir
