I've just received the following update from the Deer Commission Scotland:

"Dear Sir / Madam,

This email is intended to provide you with up to date information about the recent confirmed case of Foot and Mouth in cattle in Surrey and the effect this has on deer stalking and the movement of deer carcases in Scotland.

The Deer Commission for Scotland website now carries the following information:

Until further notice, deer stalking in parties of no more than three persons and the movement of deer carcases to a larder on the same estate can be done without a licence. Stalking in larger parties and movement of carcases from a larder can only be carried out under licence. Licences are not currently being issued but it is expected that this will be possible in the next couple of days. When available, these can be sought from your local animal health office. There are 5 offices in Scotland: Ayr 01292 291350; Galashiels 01896 758806; Inverness 01463 253098; Inverurie 01467 626300; Perth 01738 602211.

The website should be monitored on a regular basis to check for any updated information – www.dcs.gov.uk "

That is pretty positive news pete, especially as Scotland is only a short time away from the peak of their season. In saying that I suspect it may be somewhat unethical to shoot a beast that isn't going to be eaten because it cannot be moved to a suitable market. However it looks like estates will be able to get licences to solve that outstanding issue real soon now. Good news for all, thanks for keeping us informed.

caorach,

Given the chilling facilities most of the bigger Estates have, it may be that the carcass ends up being hung there for a couple weeks rather than the gamedealer.

I've also heard that similar licenses may be available in England & Wales shortly, providing the situation remains stable.

Regards,

Pete
