Myself and a friend are looking to hunt Roe Deer and seal on Hitra in a few months. I contacted a guy named Marcel Mennink through novahunt. Just wanted to see if there was anything or anyone to watch out for when booking a hunt on Hitra. Will be driving in from TRD airport.

I happened to live on the mainland across the strait from Hitra island. ´ Fact is I´m looking across the strait at the island right now Hitra is famous for its very dense red deer population. Also there is a good population of roe deer, and lately I know there have been organized seal hunts with guides. The deer on the island is known to be a tiny bit smaller than on the mainland. If you are looking for the biggest trophy I belive you can find better places. I have not hunted Hitra myself and have no knowledge about those who rent out hunting on the island. I have friends who hunt red deer on the island, and they usually take their quota each year. The hunting is very well regulated and I can´t foresee anything that might give you guys problems. That´s supposed your agent/guide outfitter runs a seroius business. Arild Iversen.

The guy I am going with really wants to take some seals, and Hitra seems like the best place to take seals and deer. Not looking for any great trophies, just wanting to relax and have a good hunt. I appreciate your input.

Sounds like fun and an interesting place. A word of caution for you though. Seals are listed under the 1972 marine mammal act and importing one may well be diffacult. You'll need to check closely with U.S.F&W. to determine if you can import a seal skin from Norway. I'd be interested in knowing that myself. I'm sure your guides will know all this but one thing to watch out for when skinning a seal is dont let any of the oil from the fat of the seal get on the fur. If you do wash it off right away. Seal oil has a really high iron content, After a short time exposed to the air the oil soaked fur will oxidise and turn yellow staining the fur. You can't get this stain out. What else to say but welcome to Norway The drive from the airport to Hitra is partly on narrow and winding roads with an underwater tunnel crossing the strait as a bonus. It is 5645 meters long and 264 meters below sealevel at its deepest. Bring goretex clothes as our west coast weather is unpredictable. Arild Iversen.
