I was browsing the web, looking at a possible hunt in Lithuania. I found a site that talked about dappled deer[/b. Perhaps it was a bad translation, but I have never heard of this species before. Can anyone enlighten me?

Thanks,

Pete

Pete - It would be a guess on my part - but the description could fit 'common' Fallow Deer. (Dama Dama)

"Spotty deer" seems to be another name for the Sika deer (Cervus nippon).
The picture on the second of your links is of a small roe deer buck.

I believe you are correct. Just guessing here, but I think spotty equates to sika and dappled to fallow. That would make some sense. As I understand it, just about all deer species there are a direct result of deer farming to one degree or another.

Thanks for trying. I simply don't speak lithuanian, though my dad did. I am just doing some basic research at the moment, as I intend go sometime in the next 2 years. I have a cousin who has spent time in Lithuania as part of an academic exchange. When I am ready, she has contacts that will be useful in arranging a hunt. I had some contacts in Vilnus many years ago, but have lost touch with them.

As I understand it, about 10 years ago, after independence, they tried to set up a commerical offering for hunting, but the game levels were just not appropriate. I believe that the deer hunting is a high fence operation for the most part. Something I am not particularly interesting in traveling thousands of miles to do. Boar and wolf are free roaming.

Regards,

Pete

Drop a line to cchunter on these forums. He arranges hunts with an outfitter in this region - maybe Latvia instead of Lithuania though.

I have zero desire to hunt Finland, Latvia or whatever. I asked a specific question which you obviously have no knowledge of. I have no need to contact any stranger, as I have stated above. But you don't bother to read. You enjoy hearing yourself too much. You remind me of a runny nose little kid looking for attention. So now you have it. Turn off the computer and go back to watching the tube.

Quail Wing (what a misnomer!)

Lets just put this rude post by a complete arsehole somewhere where it can't be re-edited for posterity.

The member I mentioned is not a stranger to these forums which you would know if you had been around longer.

I find all the guys on the European forum usually complete gentlemen in common with their fine hunting traditions but I guess there always is an exception to the rule.

PS I do know where this vitriol is coming from so should enlighten other members who are probably perplexed.

I remember a post where some dickhead academic wrote a load of bullshit on Col Patterson the famous Maneaters of Tsavo slayer. I replied on that thread that maybe eye-witness accounts of the time were more accurate than some wackademic re-writing history and destroying and ridiculing a long dead hero of the past by looking at examples completely unrelated so as to get attention on some crap thesis he published. Or something to that effect.

There was a post of why Patterson didn't build fences in a rather off tone and I relied to that, isn't a boma a fence.

Why do you hide behind an alias with no email address, no location, nothing of any sort?
