Has anyone any experience of Kammo jackets?

http://www.kammo.co.uk/

I was looking at their Fieldcoat jacket (Flat green is best when you have to travel through airports etc. and don't want to carry several jackets) and was wondering if others have any experiences good or bad with them. Currently I'm wearing a Musto Highlands and I really liked the Beratta GUL/GUN6 coat but it has no hood which makes it worthless in real bad weather. The Musto does my job fine and so I might have another but after looking around the Kammo coats have a lot of features I like. However, there are no outlets and so no way to see one other than to order it.

coarach,

At one time Kammo were one of the few company's making a dedicated stalking jacket here in the UK.

I used one of their original jackets (in DPM) for stalking for many years and it was absolutely bombproof with the quality of construction and the materials being very good indeed.

It wasn't as quiet as the latest microfibres, but it was certainly quiet enough especially after a couple of washes.

The attention to detail in the design made it very practical for stalking and it was extremely waterproof, for better than my current Deerhunter Ram jacket.

Unlike the Ram, it doesn't have a multitude of zips and pockets, which I now think i probably an advantage.

My only "concern" is that the company is now no longer owned by its founder, so I don't know if the quality has droppedthese points first, but other than that, I think they are great jackets.

Regards,

Pete

if you are thinking of spending that kind of money on a jacket, i would seriously consider the musto keepers jacket.

i have got the keepers jacket and the stalkers jacket, they are so hard wearing and reliable in the wet.

they do have loads of pockets and are very comfortable.
i have never had a kammo so cannot really compare the two,
now i have trodden the musto path i dont reckon on getting another brand.

I too got the original, which I still have. I then purchased the new camo., pattern which I use for all my stalking. Silent, waterproof, enough pockets for me. I predominately stalk on the hill but I have used it for forestry stalking. The professional hill stalker happened to get one at the same time as me and he swears by it. He should know he is out in the worst of the weather in the West highlands

Fantastic quality. I have the winchester (unlined)image which is like suede and very silent except when wet and you drag your rubber rifle pad on it when it squeeks.

The cut is very long, the fastenings very tough. The pockets are low down and huge but I for one hate carrying gear when I can feel it on the front of my legs every step I take so they stay empty. The handwarmer pockets are deep. Other pockets are limited to inside which are very hard to access.

My big gripe is the collar and cuff arrangement. There is no way of closing the external diameter of the cuffs. Unless you have motorcycle gauntlets every time you raise you binos, rain goes down the cuff. For a while it's stopped by the internal nylon cuff thingy but after a while you get wet sleeves.

The collar seems to act like a giant funnel being very generous but not easy to close having no elastic.

My verdict is that the quality is let down by the design and that it's better suited to highland stalking - being very tough it's also a bit stiffer in feel.

Thanks for all the replies, it looks like i will be going back to a Musto Highlands again Smiler

I was really sold on the Berertta until it became clear there was no hood for it. That might be OK in Italy but it is next to useless in the Hebrides.

Don't worry Hunts, we don't all go about looking like that even on a good day. Some of our sporting events can be a little formal but most people look nothing like that, honest.

caorach,

I figured as much Wink

Have you looked at the Helly Hansen Impertech?
It's popular here in Montana and in S.E. Alaska. Mine is two years old and gets heavy use. Still sheds water like off a ducks back. Reasonable price too. Not as stylish as the Musto wear though. Just a thought.

Only concern with the Musto, and some others is if you are doing alot of walking/dragging you get sooo HOT.

Am using an Arktis Falklands jacket at the moment and doesn't seem to get quite so hot, sold by Country Concepts.

A bit OT...There are a lot of great stuff out there for shooting/stalking in rough weather, be it cold or wet.
What I miss in most of the US ( Cabelas) and UK made jackets/parkas, is the lack of a small pocket for two way radio ( walkie talkies )

Hunting moose and / or red deer we always use radios to give and get information within the team.

I dont know if this a Norwegian / Swedish pecuilarity, but the big Nordic brands, all have this small pocket/ fastening strap for a small radio high on the left front of the jacket.

The use of this small trancivers are almost a must hunting as a team.

Hi Caorach

I would reccommend those Jakhti Jakt set. Mine has had some serious use now and developed some tears falling down granite lumps etc. Still waterproof, even a few cigar ash burn holes. But so what, the cost for a full setup compared to Deerhunter/Musto cancels the damage out.

Mark

Hunting is getting as close as you can, shooting is getting as far away as possible.

Hi Arild,
Here we get arrested for using a radio when hunting anything but birds. I should get a Norweigan jacket then; I like having a radio handy.

Hi people,
even if sometime it is a real annoyng thing, radio permits to follow battues and what is happening. During the wild boars hunt, if we had'n the radios we were sometime out of the world. The problem is that there are people that logorroic and speak and speak and speak ..... or some other, that don't remember that the radios are a on way communicating system that speaks when other are already speakingand the result is that noone understand nothing etc etc.
All of these when you are trying to hear, interpreting and understand the noises in the wood.

In Italy we should use radios for emergency only, but when my my wild boar hunting equipe (wbhe) is distributed on a mountain, even if we are 40/50 people, often we are really far frome the nearest hunters, and it keeps comany and make the people feel more safe.

just curious, how many of you go hunting dressed like the one in the photom tie included?

bye
Stefano
