A friend of mine showed me a lovely old Puma knife last weekend. It was a small fixed bladed stag handled knife designed for gralloching. The blade as about two to three inches long and had a slight curve to it and had a blunt or protected point to it save puncturing the gut. I have a small stainless steel gut hook that works very well, but I love the looks and quality of this very tradional design although I don't think its still in production. Does anybody know what the name of the model of the knife might be? Or are similar designs produced today in Germany? I have seen various folding knives with such blades but I would really much prefer a fixed blade. I don't really care for the knifes with a guthook ground into the back of the blade either... Pete, was the Puma one of these (note, several pages to wade through): Fixed Blade Hunting Puma Knives??? Or maybe you can locate it otherwise via the Puma website?? Totally agree with you about gut-hooks at the back of knives. To me they are more trouble than they are worth - but, to each his own... - mike ********************* The rifle is a noble weapon... I've been trying a knife with a guthook on the back of blade for past month and I really rate it. Nil chance of puncturing stomach or gut even if gralloch was delayed for an hour or so. A great asset when skinning, just make a nick and you can do all the limb incisions in the blink of an eye. A lot more user friendly than the conventional blade; only drawback to this particular knife-(Marbles) is blunt tip- takes bit of for to hock animal- rabbit, deer or sheep. Sorry to go off subject, Pete.

Mike, I did look on the Puma/ PumaIP website, but no luck...I think the knife in question is probably very years old..I also tried the Kettners web site too and no luck. If I could find the name of the model I was hoping to do a search of Puma Collectors sites and maybe find an old one... Trans-pond, I started off with a Scharde (sp?) Old Timer and in truth I just did not like the knife at all; in particular the gut hook always seemed to be catching in other stuff. But as Mike says each to their own and I don't doubt that somebody with a different approach to gralloching ect might very well like it. Next I tried a Frosts Gut Hook...That works very well and being plastic and stainless steel its easy to keep clean..I tend to use it at home when making the initial cuts for skinning ect.. In the field I have been using a small Benchmade guthook and thats been quite good also...The stainless steel does not seem to be as stainless as some others and has started to pit a little but I think I can cure it with a little wet n dry... If you have any pictures or links to your knife, post them up as I am always interested in what other tools people use.. Regards, Pete

dontom & griff, I think the pictures shows the knife i am on about, but I thought ( I may well be wrong) that the lines of the handle was slightly different..It could be that puma have produced different versions of the same knife over the years. Griff, when you say the knife is in your mag, what do you mean? You've seen one for sale recently in the UK? Regards, Pete
