Allways interested in hearing about peoples dogs that they use for stalking. Great to hear of what they were like to train, trailing experiences and any other memories.

Poppy was bought as pup to replace Otto my GWP who proved unsuitable for stalking. A very well bred labrador bitch, I decided to train her myself. By 12 months she was completely trained and has been my steadfast companion eversince.

Her first trail was a muntjac that I shot too far back. She followed the trail to an impenetrable bramble thicket and without hesitation slunk and fought her way 50yards into it. After a while the shaking of the brambles stopped. I fought my way in and found her (after much slashing and cursing) with the dead deer. An amazing feeling.

Since then she has found many dead deer that have run off and indicated quite a few. I used to disbelieve some of the ways that she ran but now I just let her get on with it.

I had a lab to retreive a boar who died in a small pond.
The gamekeeper had gone to fetch a rowboat, before he came back the Lab had pulled the floating boar by the ear up to the side of the pond.
Another Lab was the best boar pointer I ever saw.

I beleive you can teach a Labrador to do anything for you.

here is my huckleberry, Polka Von Lehrschen Frst, a Bayerische Gebirgschweisshunde.

and another picture here

she is well trained to find wounded game. she works unleashed, and when she finds the animal she bays, and bays, and bays, calling.

if there is no blood she will be back in a few minutes, sit by me, and look into my eyes.

she walks along behind me while stalking and she behaves very well. I only have to problems: she will not work if there has not been a previous shot she could hear, and after the shot sometimes I lose her control.
