I may be attending a wedding in Glasgow on Oct. 2nd and would love to sneak in a hunt for red deer while in the country. I'm not looking for a big trophy just a representative stag. Anyone have any suggestions for areas and outfitters?

Kevin,

Here's a one:

Strahanna Farm:
Galloway (says 90 min from Glasgow Airport)
Red deer and roe: $200 a day for roe, no price on reds
44 1 6 44 460 660
wildlife@strahanna.fsnet.co.uk

Most estates seem closer to Inverness than Glasgow. You could consider taking a train or driving up.

I have not had any experience with any of these estates, but I've been looking at red deer stalking for some time now.

If you can get a copy of the "William Evans Good Shoot Guide" is like a Black's WIng and Clay for the UK, gives long listing of different estates for both deer stalking and bird shooting. That with a good Scotland travel will allow you to map out a few likely locations that meet your price and time considerations.

Have a good trip!

From Glasgow you would be well placed for Red, Sika and Roe. The forests in southwest Scotland are awash with these deer. I suspect you are more likely to find still hunting thick timber rather than hill stalking as found in the highlands of Scotland.

Try phoning the Dumfries office of Smiths Gore . They are agents for some large estates in that area.

Or try Hendry Ramsay and Wilcox , who are well know sporting agents.

Or try the Forestry Commission , which is the government department who owns vast areas of forestry in Scotland. I know that they do guided deer stalking, but the do not mention it on their website.
