Binding of gamsbart is a job for pro - first he will make a separate selection by length and tie simillar lengthed hair in smaller brushes...later he will arrange and tie them around some leather center from top to bottom - starting with shortest ending with longest - painstaking job but worth the penny.

Has anyone any experience in succsessfully gluing them together? I used "Super Glue" once, and it turned the hairs white as if they were bleached.

Chamois bart (tuft) is a collective of winters coat long hair from the back. Black hair has an ivory coloured blossom on the top. The longest hair grows on loins. Only male grow them. Usually middle aged bucks have the nicest tuft. Hair grows till February when it starts to shed and the summer coat is beginning to grow - so later the season - longer the hair. Barts/tufts can measure up to 22 cm (9 inches) above bonding (anything above 20 cm is exceptional). Usually you need 2-3 chamois to make a realy nice one. They say that before WWI you could trade a good bart for a cow. here is a pic from an old book, showing how the selection of the hair is made by glass tubes (upper left), ties of 20-30 hair into bunches - aligning by size (bottom) and beginning of the actual binding around spindle.

It would take 1 week for a master binder to make one - and would charge you ~ 120 Euros here (depends on size) with additional 25 Euros for a silver quiver that holds the bart and ties it to a hat.

Wearing a bart is (was) another great thing. If you wear it gently sloping it means - coffee , however if you wear it upright it means lefty .

P.S. If compared gams bart (chamois) with boar bart there is a major difference. Boars bart is tied upside down - hair is tied together by tops so the upper part of bart is actually the roots of the hair.

This reminds somehow of tying a bucktail bait for fly fishing, the ones who are into fly tying will know what I mean: In order to sort the deer hair by length, you want to have all tips ending on the same distance from the hook, so to speak, you "stack" them using a handy little tool which is basicallly a metal tube closed on one end.

I'd be surprised if one couldn't use it either to ty a sow or chamois beard.
