Reindeer and Caribou are the same species as someone pointed out.
The original purpose was to establish some kind of domestication as the Sami have.
That proved unsuccessful so the animals were left to their own destiny and found their spot in the eastern highlands where they thrive.

Today the animals are regarded as wild as any other game species and do behave like "wild" reindeer do and I suspect like your Caribou does.
