Hunting and Gunownership in Germany for Foreigner

Hello all,

There is a possibility of me moving to Southern Barvaria. I am curious about getting things in order for hunting, and bringing a few hunting guns with me (probably a drilling, SxS shotgun and SxS rifle). Also, how difficult would it be to get access to hunting lands?

I have some experience with hunting and shooting in France and the UK, but no experience with German field sports.

Thanks in advance!

Chasseur, in your case it may take you a little time to reach end result. If you have no US Logistical support, you're probably going to have to go the German route, which is probably only going to be worth it if you're minimum 3 years or so here. Most expats were at one time connected to US Forces and at that time got their hunting license, registrations, etc completed, then got out and no big deal, all was fine in the Fatherland for them. BTW, there are a lot of them still here Cool

Good luck if you do move to Freistadt Bayern, Waidmannsheil, Dom.

Chasseur,

if you are willing to require a certain level of German, the "Jagdschein" or German hunting license still is a certain challenge but very well worth doing it.

There are today quite convenient options which did not exist some years ago, you can do it in three week's classes or during some weekends.

Even the requirememts have been lowered a little and believe me, it will make you a better and more knowledgeable hunter, even when you return to the US.

Chasseur,

Good responses from my Pals.....

If you're connected with the Military or a Work Contract receives US Military benefits (Military I.D. Card w/your position); read Dom's response.

If you're a Diplomat or Consul; you're Golden. Bring all with you - you'll be treated like; well, a King.

In Ex-Pat status; leave all Firearms at home and attempt to immerse yourself in a reason to own Firearms (required; either Hunter or Sport Shooting) the day you arrive. It's not impossible but most Ex-Pats are so busy working the resources aren't available + a good (solid) understanding of German language is required. There are two entry points for Hunters. One, an intensive; German-language oriented 3-4 week Hunting Course at an Academy costing (starting at) @ $4,000.00 upwards or immersing yourself into the local German "Wannabwe" Hunting Course structure which will cost about the same but you'll sacrafice @ 1 year's time.

Cheers,
