Very nice video: rat sniping!

I remember someone posting here an article on rat sniping with air rifle and night vision scope, if I remember well it was also from the UK.

Anyone knows where I can find that?

I´d be really interested in a scope like that! My wife would love me for "helping out" in the stables... Wink

Great Vid!

I used to shoot pigeons for a keeper in Pangbourne who used a red dot scope (one of the ones that projected a dot on the target) on his airrifle and would shoot rats with his grandson on ten tonnes of rotting wheat that had been dumped.

He wouldn't take anyone apart from his grandson as it was their shared bit of sport!!

We've just found a load have moved into our pens at the shoot so a chainsaw and a couple of terriers are in order I think!!!

Surgical precision!

Question: how did he shoulder the air rifle with the video camera stuck to the scope?

I'm with Fallowbuck though, can't beat a few terriers and a good stick!

Make sure you put plenty of oil in the chainsaw engine for extra smoke...

I´ve heard that there are scopes that have a video feature -sound mucho expensive. Anyone have experience with low light sniping of pests? What would be a good scope?

The terriers is an OK approach but I´m not allowed to use smoke in the stable ´cause it bothers the horses...

Funny how the comments are not as sympathetic to the quarry as the videos where deer are being shot....

THe guy is using a digital NV monocular (Yukon Ranger - complete with 'line out socket') mounted on an AirArms .22 S410 air rifle.

The monocular is mounted on the ocular of his normal telescopic sight with a cable to a Digi video recorder - so, a relatively easily handled package.

FB - a BSA tactical XL for £216 (Sportsman) should tick the boxes in your quest for a fun gun for the pens! Smiler

Great video and a lot of fun.

I have no experiences with air guns.

Are there powerfull semi auto airguns on the market?

My fried has a rat problem in his horse stable. We tried a lot, last was a 22 with silencer, but we damaged to much with it.

I have minimal experience with air weapons - however, here in the UK we are limited to rifles producing 12 foot pounds before a licence is required.

This is more than adequate for your task, though air weapons are available producing up to 60 ftlbs or even more.

Still not much compared to the 100ftlbs+ produced by your kk!

Ian,

Do you have any more info on how the Yukon Ranger actually mounts on the scope?

Pete

I looked up their homepage and found this:

This would be an awesome scope for ratting...

Crewe,

The scope in your link is a traditional night vision device with a 1st Generation light amplifying tube, rather than a digital device as Ian mentions..The spec for that says its comparable with a 2nd Gen device, which is very good performance for the money..

I've tried a couple of similar devices with Gen 1 tubes and found them pretty disappointing...
whether they would be good enough for ratting at say 20 yards, I don't know...

Regards,

Pete

The guy had made up a cage to allow mounting to the scope. Reported difficulty with alignment and cross hair centering.

This is probably a better bet - a relatively new development that covers all bases. Costs 'only' £500 - cheap for this level of performance.

http://www.gbsights.co.uk/digital_as.htm

To get best performance, it needs to be linked to a scope with PA - ideally side adjustment. The scope should have a low power setting - ideally no more than 2-3x magnification.

Note that these are only suitable for recoilless rifles - otherwise the unit gets surgically implanted....and you take to wearing lycra! Smiler

Back in the days of my youth, we use to be able to go to the town dump with our 22's and shoot all the rats we wanted to. We shot loads of them. To Do it at night with an air rifle looks like a nice way to spend the evening. Night Vision, Just goes to show what happens in a forty year span. At the time I was dump shooting rats Night Vision was a real secret and only the Military could afford it, now, For a few hundred dollars Euro's or what have you, you to can go and own the night.
