Lead Shot in the UK?

Is lead shot still available for reloading shotshells in the UK and if so, in what quantities is it generally sold?

I am looking to add some weight to a benchrest with a cast aluminium base, and thought filling the voids in the base with a mix of lead shot and glass resin would do the trick. I think 5lb or 6lb of BB's or smaller would probably be plenty..

Regards,

Pete

try Henry Krank(pudsey, leeds) or look up Clay and Game reloaders.
there are lots of people still reloading lead or shooting muzzle loaders.
good shooting

Pete,

I was in Chris potters the other day and Rick has a new "bag" to shoot off of at a bench rest. It is filled with a Non lead but very heavy ballast, which I seem to remember was not too expensive.

I'll ask about it for you.

Cool

Pete,

As an aside, if you know someone who casts bullets that could be a source. If you trust yourself to do the project; molten lead can be done up easily on a camp stove with an old cast iron pot and poured directly or with a spoon (a glove is a good idea!). I've had good experience pouring molten lead into a number of bases of aluminium reloading and benchrest accesories - works too, without the cost of purchasing lead shot! I used whatever I can get ahold of, wheelweights, linotype and even straight plumbers lead.

Pouring lead into something requires the accepting cavity to be absolutely dry and free of any grease - do not pour motlen lead into anything that has any type of moisture or grease in it!

I just rough up the place where the lead weight is to be added with a Dremel Tool to ensure the lead will take a good hold and pour right into the cavities.

I used lead shot (#7.5) & epoxy on the hollow base and under the legs of a Caldwell's plastic benchrest and the project turned out very well, adding lots of stability to the rest which previously was so light it was all over the bench.

Cheers,

Thanks Gents,

I had considered going the molten lead route as I have all the kit including wheel weights to do it, but was a little unsure how it would work.

As the aluminium base is in good condition, I didn't want to risk the heat either distorting it, or buggering up the paint work..

I was also not actually sure that the lead would bond to the aluminium as aluminium is used for bullet molds where its important the lead donesn't stick!

Regards,

Pete
