I am splat in the classic swine fever zone. This comes from Germany and is related to the one you depict in Luxembourg. We act exactly the same way. Every shot boar should be examined for CSF and either destroyed, and then we are refund 60 (100 in Belgium or Luxembourg I think)or if the animal is sound it may be sold within the control zone. What troubles!!!!

Bluetick,

You are speaking from the country of Liberty.
The costs of the pound of meat : Pork 0,5 $, Wild Boar 1.2$, Roe 3$, Stag 0.3-1.5$.
Hunting is depending on the place you hunt. Most of the territories in France are free. When the territory is state-owned it is auctioned and let for 12 years : cost between 10 and 24$/ acre, 6200 and 15500$ / square mile. Plus taxes, 30%. Moreover when you drive hunt you get a lot of game in one day, to much to be shared, one have to sell meat to balance our expenses.
Mainly, country folk are our best buyers..

Congratulations, outstanding buck.

1894,

I don't quite follow what you mean in your last post.

My understanding on the proposed changes is that somebody like your self, even though they deliver to a gamedealer who is inspected by a vet, will still have to become a "Trained Hunter" ie someone qualified to inspect the carcass themselves...

Now it may well be that when the dust settles, and DEFRA & LANTRA show us the new regulations in black and white, there might be an exemption for people selling to gamedealers who use the serices of a vet...Or is a little common sense from the Government too much to ask for?

Regards,

Pete

50p/lb isn't a bad price pete.

On Fallow we were getting as little as 19p!! In fact I wasn't actually selling it at that level. It didin't cover the cost of running them in each time. I found myself at the end of last season with 6+ beasts in the chiller, and no where for them to go. I got a bunch of mates in and directed procedings on the processing front. They all went home with a freezer full of prime Venison joints/mince and sausages!!! Incidentally I don't like to sell my deer unless I have so much I can't process it and don't want to waste it.

It's actually a gripe of mine that on one hand game dealers pay 25 for a whole carcass and on the other hand I go to the game fair and see a SHIN sold for 16!!! The Rolled Joints were nearly 40!!! (1.5kg-2kg).

Speaking of Chillers, I'll start another thread>....

Stupid regulations call for like evasion. In our neighbouring country Luxemburg, there is definite proof of porcine plague among wild boars. As a countermeasure, Belgian authorities have edicted a (too large) safety buffer zone along the border, where all harvested boars must be turned in for destruction. A fixed sum is paid as compensation and, while it is way below the going price for a large animal, it's much more than a small one fetches. Now what happens ? Hunters from both sides of the safety line swap the biggies (killed within the buffer zone and to be sold on the safe side) against "piglets" shot outside the buffer zone. The latter are turned in to the vet' inspection and collect more than their commercial value. So far, the official reaction has been to express concern about the population explosion among Wild Boars, considering the unusual high ratio of young vs. adults

Conclusion : too many laws kill the Law...
