If your choices were limited just upon any of the mentioned bullets, which one would you pick ?

180 gr bullet to be used in either 30-06 or 308 win and for hunting hogs that can easily weight more than 300 lbs ....

We are not talking about shooting abilities, just plain bullet construction ...

Resulting choice .... and reasons ?

Thank you all in advance

Afrikaander.

My experiences with these bullets are not in favor to use them on a boar.....

If I only had these two bullets on hand for a boar hunt I would probably load them upside down in the cases. Thats, in my opinion, the only way to be sure of getting proper penertation on a boar

Ill go with the GK, they are probably cheaper

I use mostly Sierra's in 7x64, .300 Win Mag and .338 Win Mag and never had a bullet fail. The reason is I follow Sierra 's recommendations, i.e. GK SP are for long range (BTW, the GK BTHP is much tougher and ca be used on heavier game at short range) and Pro-H for the bigger stuff. Accuracy is wonderful, nearly match grade in my rifles. Here are the 2 GK I ever recovered :

L: 160 GK BTSP from my 7x64, recovered from the opposite ham after a frontal shot on Muntjac at 80 m ( 181 % expansion and 48 % retained weight)
R: 165 GK BTSP from my .300 Win, recovered from hide pouch on opposite flank after a raking frontal shot on Red stag at 250 m (204 % expansion and 78 % retained weight).

Andr.

Thats a typical example how these bullets can be used with good results!

Long range or not so tuff game makes the GK suitable. The bullets would probably not perform as well in a big boar at 50 m.

The .30 cal bullet have expanded to a good diameter and have good retaining weight. Considering that the range was 250 m there is a risk of faliure on close range an tuff game. Or.....?

Correct. When hunting Roe with my 7x64 where there's a chance to meet Wild Boar, I switch to the 160 GKHP (same load, same POI) which is a much tougher bullet than its HP configuration might suggest. For tough game, I'm satisfied with the Pro-Hunter. I shot my biggest boar with a 180 PH out of my R93 .300 Win. Running shot(s) beween 60-80 m. : 1st. shot made him skid on his knees, got up and stumbled along until 2nd. shot stopped him, spewing blood but still on all 4. This should have been enough but, having seen the trophy sized tusks and not being particularly attracted by the perspective of tracking down a wounded boar of that size, I gave him a 3rd. one, which keeled him over. All 3 bullets penetrated completely and the lungs were a mess. These are his tusks, taped at 20-21 cm :

I have used the 150gr,165gr Nosler Ballistic Tips and the 165 Sierra HPBT Gameking in the 308 on several deer and a few pigs. The Sierra HPBT is a "stouter" bullet than the Nosler. With the 180grain bullets at 308 and 3006 velocities either one should work for most shots.
However... A 180 Nosler Partition will NOT fail. Bullets are cheap, why take a chance?
