Looking for some advice as a wild boar virgin!

I am going to go driven boar shooting in this coning November.

I have the rifle calibre and scope sorted out.

Tikka T3 Varmint 300wsm, 1-4 x 24 ill scope.

Now I am a ballistic tip man normally, either 125gr or 150gr in the 300.

Should I stick with 150gr Ballistic Silvertips, go upto 168gr or even 180gr in the CT Ballistic Silvertips.

Try Nosler E-tips in 168gr or 180gr


or use something else?

From a 300wsm? Minimum 180gr, maybe even 200gr. Nosler partitions if you can lay hands on them, if not, Hornady Interlocks would be fine. No light for calibre bullets, and no silvertips or plastic tips, particularly at 300mag velocities.

Ranges will be short, probably 75m max, more likely 25m.

I chest shot that Muntjac at Baldock last year with a 125gr ballistic tip out of the 300wsm

I do love those plastic tips, but didnt think the lighter weights would be upto boar.

What do people use in their .308's and .30-06's anyone used 165/168gr bt's what about Germany and copper bullets I did hear that some places would not allow them.

I spoke to a German forester about barnes bullets on my sole sortie after boar a couple of years ago.

Apparently the reason they don't like copper bullets is because a copper slug is supposed to be a good way to kill a tree and the increased chance of ricochets to the beaters and dogs.

I expect Gerry will be along to provide the full picture at some point.

Go with bonded, as heavy/slow/blunt bullet as possible - obstacles may be a nuisance - I'd take Norma's 180gr Oryx:

Y have a friends wit 300 WM the bullet is a 180gr Accubond, is a very good bullet!
Y shot wit a 7,5x55 (swiss) wit 180 gr. Oryx by Norma.

This ist the frist of this Season, distance 280 m, wit 300 WM, accubond 180 gr., is immediatly dead!!!

Another Norma Oryx fan here; 200 gr. would be my choice.

For Driven Hunts I'm a large, slow, kinda Guy. When I select a .30/06 Sprg. I use 180 gr. Hornady Interlock Round Nose w/55 grs. H-4350 - works very good. I load the same cartridges for sevaral hunting buddies who use Remington & Browning semi-auto's and they consider this a right smart load as well.

I've never done any Driven Hunting with a 300 WM, 300 H&H, 300 Weatherby or a 300 WSM so, Gee I guess I'm not really qualified to offer an opinion on the 300 Wizz-Bangs. Since you're asking; I'd go with a RN 180, 200 or 220 grainer.

I normally take a 375H&H or 9.3x62 rifle for Driven Game; with either 300 gr. Hornady RN's in the 375 or 250 gr. Nosler BT's in the 9.3 (Accubonds to follow when the supply of BT's is exhausted) so I guess that sorta depicts which corner I'm in.

The heavier the better. I had very good success with 30-06/220 grain and 9,3x62/ 286 grain, all standard softs. Ballistic tips are not the way to go and also the 300 WSM is not ideal for a 10m shot.

Norma recommend Vulkan for deeper penetration on boar.Although I must say I am a fan of their Oryx head.Nosler partitions are pretty damn good too.
I must confess to using 120gr ballistic tips in my 6,5x55 for a couple of years.They were superbly accurate but did seem to do a lot of meat damage/blood spatter.
I had a couple of boxes of Hirtenberger [6,5x55] which were loaded with the Sierra Gameking 160gr head,tackdrivers and terminal on deer and boar.

That works! For driven game I shoot a 196 grs Oryx in my 8x64S, and have no reason to complain.

A colleague shoots the .300 WSM and swears by AccuBonds. The magnum velocity and closer range calls for a bullet that holds together well. Alternatively, move up a notch in bullet weight - 200 to 220 grs...

180g Barnes TSX worked for me

I use a 30-06, 180's either Partitions or A Frames. Like said, distances will in most cases easily be inside of 100m (if not 100 feet ) so I'd recommend going with heavier bullets also, Waidmannsheil, Dom.

I love Nosler Partition, 180grs, hit them strong!

slow and heavy. soft nosed.

Oryx work well for me though I've not pointed them at boar.

As well as providing good on game performance they are relatively cheap which allows for lots of practice.

For wild boar I use 220 grain round nose in 30 cal. Either Hornady or Sierra both work really well. 220 grains really seems to knock the wind out of their sails
