Red stag hunting is simply one of the kind
And you can hunt them in so many different environments and in the end I found out that size is cool but as long as it’s mature animal, it’s all good
The roar is unmatched in deep dark timber in late evenings
My girlfriend was in awe and scared shitless at the same time
Most of American hunters should do red stag hunt in native environment
Not putting down NZ, but ...
Besides Europe and wives and girlfriends is the best combination to get you laid on regular basis

I know that awe feeling. My wife and I stalked right into the middle of this big breeding herd in moderate timber. It was special.

I will never forget the 10 kilo gold medal stag I shot in Poland. It was raining hard and right at dark. He stepped out in the open, roaring like crazy at a lesser stag( still a nice 6x6) I had passed on....

The one you got JDollar is a stud
I shot one laying down on my stomach in peet bogs in thickest spruce thicket at maybe 15 feet while he was just screaming
It was crazy because I had two more next to me screaming as well
Still can’t figure why they didn’t smell me

He looks so old and perfect. I love the shot glass holder crowns. They do not need to be freakishly tines or even massive; just a nice little holder.

This stag has that on screen right and had it on the left until that time was broke.

It is hard to hear, but when we were hunting Fallow and started to get into the group my wifr got a Stag roaring on her phone. I listen to it once a week, but I am strange.

We had stags fighting hinds running, stags fighting. They were pouring in off a steep slope. But the biggest cut out a hind and she did not even try to run from him. He just nodded away from the party and right into our lap.

He was a typical, it still looked like a mule with a dog wood tree on his head. All that roaring and breeding but he never roared once. When we got back in, I told Kelemns and begged him to take another hunter who was looking for Stag in there. Kelemens did not want to because that side was were he had me trying to kick out a Fallow. He agreed. He and the Stag client went in there that evening and two more times they saw stag, but not him.

I did not shot a Stag on that hunt, but count it as my second most successful single day of hunting.

It’s a good hunt cause the animal is loud during the rut. It makes for an interesting hunting environment.

I hate to see what farm breeding has done to the red deer. the stupid measure tape approach is breeding freaks just like in white tails.

I would hunt more red deer other than the fact they are terrible to eat once you get to the really old stags and I don’t want to kill any animal that is not eaten.

Great animal - the king of deers.

We were coming back late from spotlighting pigs in Spain (probably less than legal, and about 100 yards from the castle a big 8x8 stag was standing there.

My guide wanted me to shoot, but wasn't sure the master of the house was home or not. So I didn't.

I have not had an opportunity at a shooter since that night. Maybe 2018 is the year.

I agree with Mike about the farm hunts
Prime example why I would never hunt in NZ, besides not being native, their prices are simply thievery

Boarkiller:

Where would you suggest hunting in Europe? Are there good free range hunts? I am more concerned with the experience than the size of the stag.

Is it similar to our elk hunting?

My wife is on vacation in Europe as I type this. She really likes it.

I am thinking my next guided hunt may be in Europe.

Jason

The beauty of stag hunting in Europe as that it is wide and varied. You can have the forests of eastern europe with their big stags, open hills of Scotland rich in culture but no trophy expectations. Then there are the forestry lowland stags and parkland English stags.

All that before you go to portugal, (one of my favourites along with Scotland) for the Iberian stag and their diamond shaped antlers.

I think I could spend a lifetime hunting red stags in Europe and never repeat an experience.

Incidentally it also amazes me that people spend the kind of money they do on the giant NZ reds when they can be had in Europe for a fraction of the cost.

K

Free range Red Stags can be had in Austria, Scotland, Hungary, Romania, Chez Republic, Romania, Portugal, Spain, Bulgaria, Germany, Corita has Red Stag free range, even France and New Zealand.

I think Solvinia has free range red stags.

Of course, you can find high fence farmed animals in just about all those locals. I do not like it either. One needs to just ask questions and follow up with folks who have been there.

New Zealand does seem to be the most expensive even for free range. France and New Zealand doe appear to have more high fence followed by Austria.

Jason, fallow buck is right
I would say really good hunts are Romania, Bulgaria for sure but most Eastern Europe is good
Terrain varies and if you don t worry about size, many hunts are more than reasonable

There are very few outfitters in Germany that cater to the non-German speaking public.

A German hunting license would be a major requirement to hunt with most of the outfitters in Germany.

The experience will be better and for bigger stags in other countries.

I agree. I stepped in a pissing contest with a very crazy poster on AR and need this relief.

I love red stags. I have only chased them in NZ but had a great time. Headed to Austria this fall to chase them there.

A great animal and very fun to hunt.

For some of the moSt incredible open range red stags in Spain ¡SIERRA DE LA CULEBRA! Dad owns one of the most beautiful estates, truly wild but nearly totally fenced in the south of Spain. Every year I go north to la culebra before going south!! The problem is that Spain has some of the best & worst outffiters in the world. La culebra needs to be handled with care.... do your due diligence.

My wife and I are joining another couple to hunt the Scottish Highlands in September. This is our second trip to Sheramore with Mike McCrave. Hunted properly, these stags require some serious stalking. Its a great couples trip with opportunity for guided sight seeing and fishing in the River Spey.

You could of course simply hunt red stag in New Zealand the way the New Zealanders do. The game parks are only aimed at tourist hunters.

I just thought I would mention it. The roar is beginning in a weeks time over here - none of the Kiwi hunters will be paying to hunt on a game farm.
You get into the proper NZ back country as well, the real mountains. The game parks are mostly ex sheep stations.

wild NZ red deer grow much larger than the UK.

Don't bring your wife though. It's all backpack hunting and fly camping.

Biebs,

It was in what’s called the Lowlands of Scotland, near Dumfries, which is actually the highest mountains in Scotland. Booked through FallowBuck. Very affordable, but wear your rubber boots. Very wet even on the top of the mountains. So beautiful, and close to Turnberry, Troon, and other great destinations.

I have often thought that free range Stag to free range stag the Scottish stags are generally smaller bc of the island effect.

But it could simply be nutrition.

BWW,

Your statement is not actually true. True Spanish (Iberian) stags (Cervus elaphus hispanicus) are different to continental stags Cervus Elaphus, or the scottish hill stag Cervus Elaphus Scotticus.

The Spanish and more often the Portuguese stags (that are a purer bloodline from what I have seen) have a distinctive diamond shape to them. We have shot 14-16+ pointers that were 45"-50" wide at the widest point and 9"-10" between the crowns!! The royals tend to still be wide but they are not really the oldest stags so the configurations still needs to develop.

In addition the true Iberian stags do not have a mane on them unlike the continental stags. You can see some examples HERE

Typically the body size is not huge, and I woudl say that the antler size compared to the body size is much bigger in ratio. That's not to say they are the biggest stags in the world but they are distinct none the less.

You can see by comparison some of the manes on our scottish stags like this one where the mane hairs can be a foot long in the Scottish Gallery

Rgds,
Kiri
