I recently came into possession of a rather interesting rifle, it is an Oberndorf Mauser actioned 9.3x62, with the makers(?) name on the full length barrel rib, this is Jos. Oschatz-Potsdam. The rifle has a half-round/half-octagon barrel with the full rib and a barrel mounted swivel base, with one rigid and one folding leaf sights. It has an old, but, useable scope on claw mounts which have the front partially dovetailed into the receiver ring. The metal is original, slightly faded and otherwise pristine as is the bore. The stock may have been re-finished in some glossy stuff, bit, it is VERY fine work; the wood is beautiful, the inletting superb and it has an ebony insert in a small schnable forend tip. There are side panels and the forend is extremely slender to the tip, the buttplate is finely checkered horn. The entire package is in fabulous condition and it has these little forend pins as well; it has double set triggers and a shotgun trigger guard. This rifle has border engraving and a lever floorplate release, it is obviously a high class piece and, I am told, was made in 1927. I would enjoy hearing any comments as to the provenance of this rifle, it is a neat old piece and has recently shot an inch at 100M with S&B factory ammo---not too bad for almost 80 years old. Who was Oschatz and what is a piece like this worth?

kutenay, Very nice piece, typical hunting rifle of the period and I find most of these types of sporter Mausers very well done and attractive rifles (it is a matter of tatse to some). Can you give me a little bit more to go on? Can you remove the action from the stock? There should be all sorts of proof marks underneath the action or under the barrel just ahead of the action. I would imagine it is Josef or Joseph Oschatz from Potsdam (outside of Berlin). Not prominsing anything but have been successful in the past with some others. Cheers, Number 10

The oschatz company is still in business, but no longer in Berlin, the company is now in the Stuttgart area. The company is well knowi for Rifle and handgun tuning and engraving. Try http://www.waffen-oschatz.de Maybe they can tell you more about your rifle. Burkhard
