Not that I have the money to plan such a hunt yet, but I heard that you can hunt Alpine Ibex in Switzerland as well as Austria. What are the cost and who do I contact?

To hunt alpine ibex the first thing to do is kidnap a king. Now hold him for ransom.

Now you can afford an alpine ibex hunt! Smiler

Most Swiss Ibex taken by non-Swiss residents are hunted in the Canton of Vallis. You have to apply to (mumble - I probably can get the address if you are serious), and they will then assign you a hunt, in time. Normal waiting period for an old buck would be 2-5-? years. Current prices for an old buck that I have heard of late were around 6K CHF.

A friend of mine was on the Vallis waiting list, and was contacted whether he could hunt on short notice (like arrive tomorrow night, or forget it). He shot a 14 year old buck that the game keeper had decided needed to go before winter (it had started to loose weight badly). Nice buck, I can send a picture if you are interested.

You *may* also be able to find ibex offered in the Canton of St. Gallen. Some of those hunting areas do sell animals, but without super connections it could be a tough search.

Austria and Slovenia also offer alpine ibex, not exactly cheap, but I guess that is the name of the game.

In all Swiss locations, you actually count the rings on the horns (with a spotting scope) before you shoot a particular buck. That is how sure you have to be that you shoot one in the correct age class. The bucks are not hunted very hard, and are comparatively easy to approach.

MHO, I wouldn't mind knowing more if you have the information handy. If not don't worry about it.

You know Alpine Ibex in the USA or Argentina are still $10,000. What the hell is that about? $10,000 for a gameranch animal.

I'll ask my friend if he wants to share the information. Sometimes he is not that quick to answer e-mail, though. So stay tuned.

You may shoot an Ibex "Alpensteinbock" in Austria in Tyrol or Styria.

They live >above< the Chamois. Either rent a helo for the most part of the height or better be in shape ...

Price could be around € 10.000 to 14.000. Thats was what was quoted to me. Seriously, I would say 10.000 and a good condition should get you one.

I am very sure it could be the experience of a lifetime. IF you are a real hunter, the people will recognise it and treat you accordingly - all o.k., but be aware of the only two deadly things in Austria: the car driving and the cuisine ( will take some years, is most excellent, but eventually will get you ;-))
