Hunters for Peace in Central- and South Eastern Europe

The International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation (CIC) is successfully engaged for 10 years now with a peace initiative through the Coordination Forum for Central- and South Eastern Europe in bringing together all hunting associations of former Yugoslavia, which were quite divided due to the previous state of war. Motto: “Game does not know borders” and “Reach out for your neighbour”.

At the occasion of this 10-year celebration, the CIC Coordination Forum for Central- and South Eastern Europe, which was initiated by Veljko Varicak, the CIC could present an astonishing success-story: through this cooperation all of the previously hostile parties were brought together at a round table. Bilateral agreements could be arranged between all countries in terms of a cross-border cooperation for game conservation, harmonizing hunting regulations and coordinating the education of both hunting guides and the hunters themselves.

Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovenia and Vojvodina are the core countries participating in this peace initiative. Next to the neighbouring countries Austria, Bulgaria, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Romania, also Slovakia and the Czech Republic and, recently Russia belong to the Coordination Forum.

The success of the CIC in building bridges across nations and in bringing people together is well reflected in the “Declaration of Mostar” (below to be downloaded). This unique document convincingly proves how the common passion for wildlife can unite people of different background, religion and culture.

This exemplary activity of the CIC has, i.a., been officially acknowledged in 2008 by EU Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner and been applauded by her as truly exemplary.
