I am looking into a job in Portsmouth England, what kind of shooting possibilities are there in that area?

What would an American military person stationed there have to do to get a rifle and shotgun permit?

There is some good stalking within an hour or so of the area, but if might be expensive..

If you're going to be stationed over here for a couple of years, you'd be treated just like us..

A shotgun certificate is just a paperwork exercise really, should be no problem at all getting that..

Your firarms certificate might be more problematic but not unduely so..If you have any State side hunting/shooting qualifications, they would no doubt help...Then you would have to show the Police "good reason" for wanting a rifle(s)..If you booked or went out on a half a dozen stalking trips with a "guide" using a borrowed rifle, that is usually enough..Some Police forces want you to hold a Deer Management Qualification Level 1, but there's no legal requirement...

With both your shotgun certificate or firearms certificate, you will be expected to have secure storage..For us, that usually means a basic $200 gun cabinet/locker, but if your base has an armoury, you might get away saying you would leave it your firarms in there..

Once you get your tickets, they are valid for 5 years and renewal is more or less a formality unless you've been a bad boy and come to the attention of the Police..

Regards,

Peter

Pete,
The armoury would unlikely be acceptable as storage for a sporting firearm as unlicenced individuals would have access to it. Mind, as you know it all depends who you are talking to and if their other half had a "headache" or not....

if you do manage to move over here cos of a job
look me up, i am only 3 hours drive away and hav a spare rifle
certainly can give you a days stalking and a bed for the night if needed, if successfull you can keep the carcass what ever it may be you hav shot (roe muntie or fallow)
can't be any fairer than that

Nice Move,
You could join the Chichester Harbour Wildfowlers and you are only a nod and a spit away from some very good Fallow stalking.

Nothing leaves an armoury without a signature so in the British army it used to be OK (in fact the only way) to store personal weapons. They tend to get a lot of oily fingerprints from 'inpsection' and so nothing too good was/is wise.
