I was recently viewing some clips with a friend who had just come back from hunting in Germany. Each picture told a tale in itself, one was of the days hunt at which they played the horns as a matter of respect, each horn representing different species. Another clip was of the last meal and how this differs between sexes... Did we in the UK ever have this tradition, or is this just a European thing! regards griff

I think the tradition for roe was a meal of SSG pre the deer act! I think our non Highland stalking has all evolved from the continent. Because most of it is solitary, ritual is absent.

I would say that the sentiments reflected in many of the continental traditions are stil evident here but just not expressed in the same ritualistic way because we are usually alone as 1894 says. To be honest I'd feel a bit of a prat stood in the middle of a feild blowing a trumpet over a fallow pricket... If anyone saw me I think the FLO would have grounds to revoke my FAC, not to mention what the dog would think.... It looks very cool on the continent though. FB

FB...I guess those girls would be a little bluish wearing thous costumes if they shoud perform such a sermony in our moose hunting camp up north. But what the heck, they would be more than welcome to make a try About traditions...where I live, big game hunts are, and have always been for the venison, sole and simple. Some wery few have done stalking for trophies, the number increasing lately due to the fact that landowners see a new source of income, and thats fair enough. Therefore traditions like those seen on the European mainland ( Germany, Poland, France ?). are wery uncommon in Norway at least. In old ( and new ) photos, it is not uncommon that the hunters sits astride the moose carcass smoking and smiling. Not my cup of thea at all, becauce I feel the game deserve a sertain amount of respect ( even though you are about to eat it afterwards ). But as have been mentioned by several here, a lot of stalking is done by single hunters and trumpeting and blowing horns would most likely result in that one looses the huntig lease should the landowners be aweare. At least I wouldn´t dear and risk being picked up by those guys in white frocks. Arild Iversen.
