Hi,

Wondering what big game is available to hunt in Ireland.

Sounds like i might have a business trip over there in the next 2-3 months and would love to try some hunting if the time and budget allows.

I tried googling and couldn't find a whole lot as far as prices. Any ideas on cost?

Thanks,
Brett

There is not a lot of commercial hunting in Ireland.

You could probably buy a day's driven Pheasant shooting at short notice.

Your best option, assuming you will be in the Dublin area, is a day or two stalking Sika Deer in Wicklow.

If you go to this site and post a general query, there are a couple of guys who take clients out in Wicklow.

Cost should be no more that €200 - €250 per day.

Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they are not out to get you....

Northman,

The mainstay of Irish Stalking is Sika and Fallow deer. There are comparatively few commercial guiding operations in Ireland due to the way the sport is controlled by clubs, but there are some good contacts on this forum for sika stalking in Ireland, so 'm sure they will pipe up.

What area are you going to? also do you like bird shooting? as the next couple of months will be prime time for irish rough shooting and wildfowling.

How heavy-duty are the animal-rights folk over there?
Some places I post at make it sound like hunting is all but extinct over there because of them...

Iowanic, in Ireland the animal rights nuts are almost non-existant, there are a few, but everyone sees them as nuts.

About 20 years ago when I was in University, a bunch of arsehole students decided they would go and sabotage a hare coursing event, they got the crap kicked out of them.

Opposition to "hunting" in Britain in mainly targeted on the guys on horses hunting foxes with dogs. It is pretty hard to sabotage two guys out on a mountain with rifles hunting deer.

The reason I brought it up, is at those sites I mentioned, this one fellow who claims to been from Ireland apparently wrote a book about hare-coursing that would seem to be rather less then friendly towards hunters in general.
When this fellow exchanged posts with us in regards to the book; it definately got very heated and frankly rather unpleasant.

I just was wondering if this fellow and his story were bunk or otherwise.
Thanx for your insight.

All,

Thanks for all of the info. I will check them out.

I am not sure what area i will be in as of yet. I might wind up traveling around all of Ireland. Just depends on the sites i have to visit.

Looking more at big game than anything. Might be up for some wingshooting also. Just depends on my schedule.

Wondering about costs. The 200-250 a day, is that just for the guiding, or does that include an animal?

Are these free roaming animals?

Thanks,
