I've shot a few but they've not been rutting due to the terrible weather (wet and windy). A good hot spell is needed urgently.

What happens if we don't get the weather to trigger the rut? If I remember correctly it is due to length of daylight to start the rutting?

Is it possible that a rut is missed?

Very good question - I'm asking myself at the moment.

I don't thing they're not rutting so much as it seems very sporadic. I've seen slots that would indicate chasing at night.

Also it's fairly early days yet. A bit of rain and some sun should give those nice muggy evenings we require.

Hi,
I am hoping to get a few outings stalking in this week on thursday evening and friday morning.
I shall be trying (as before) my "Buttalo" call,I have never had much success with it,and only managed to attract does so far Confused
but live in hope of attracting some bucks as I have heard it is quite something when you get it right.
I have a tape by Richard Prior of what the sounds should be like, but maybe I'm tone deaf!!
Anyway will keep trying during the rut.

Cheers
Roebuck

They are rutting away like belt-fed mortars on my farm. Loads of activity tonight. Warm and muggy.

Woke up to find a doe asleep on the front lawn on Sunday. 20 feet from the front door. It has come to something when you have to clear up deer crap and dog crap off the grass!

Bucks have been chasing/hard at heel to does for a week now. Yesterday afternoon got a good view of a nice buck hard at heels to a doe, then within 20 yards of me it mated (only for a few seconds) then started chasing again for another minute, then mated for longer period (me swearing that I didn't have camera, shooting policy has changed a bit) after second mating the buck lay down and the doe wandered off and lay down about 50 yards away. I made my exit and returned after 15 minutes with camera and bipod for a picture of the buck, amazingly got to within 25 yards of buck again and got a few pictures before the doe moved off taking him with her. On viewing pictures only one was a keeper, just showed bucks antlers and the doe sniffing at him, the rest are a bit blurred or vegetation in the way! What I thought was interesting was that the doe remained silent throughout the chase and the mating. In the past I have used the buttalo caller but have had more misses than hits - we don't have a huge roe population in my area so I was pleased with my observation, and a living trophy as well! Good luck with the rut...

Hi all,
got out on thursday evening as planned with my buttalo call and 222 rem in hand,My plan was to get to a grassy knoll with birch trees near a lovely grass field adjoining pine forestry and spy the field (always good)before trying the call.
On my way to the knoll I saw movement along a fence line and what should be coming right at me jinking through the trees but a roebuck,he wasn't presenting any kind of shot however and he continued towards me unawares Big Grin,as I was partially hidden by the tree I was leaning against.
When he got to within 10 metres of me he presented a nice side on shot....but through the scope I could only see a huge patch of reddish brown coat and no distinct target, the problem was I had the scope turned up to 10X Roll Eyes slowly I reached up and turned it back down to 3.5X but the buck saw the movement gave a snort and bounded off, luckily in a clear straight line,I followed him through the scope gave a sharp whistle and he stopped...perfect,dropped him with a offhand shot through the heart lungs Smiler.
result for sure...still haven't used my buttalo yet though!! next time perhaps!!
only had the 35mm camera so photos to follow when processed and scanned.
good luck with your stalking guys.
cheers Roebuck

Those of you who love to hunt during and after the rut should have a look at the site of Klaus Demmel. He produces the Rottumtaler Rehblatter.
I bought one recently and have never owned a more succesful instrument for calling roebucks!

The buck season starts August 16 here in Sweden, but the rut is surely on. The other day I watched a buck chasing a doe on the lease I have with cchunter and he was able to film them a bit later on.

What sounds do Roe deer make? It is similar to sounds whitetails make here in the U.S.? Grunt calls are very popular for whitetails and I wouldn't go hunting without mine. I enjoy very much reading all of your posts about hunting in Europe and England.

For the past 2 weeks they have either been making barking noises as they run away from me! Mad Red Face or making noises to themselves whereever they are (which isn't near me!)

I've just been relatively unlucky for the amount of time put in. Lots of little things conspiring.

my son is keen to go out stalking with me,but he is just a little too young at the moment but soon though Smiler,he helps with the skinning and dressing of the deer, and knows where the food on the table comes from.
good stalking

Thanks Wyohunter,
it wasn't too bad a buck for our area size wise although the head was nothing to write home about.
The rifle I use is a RWS Mod 89 222rem which I have found to be light and accurate,I often go for a neck shot if the situation is right and I can get the bipods down.
The scope is a Simmons Whitetail classic 3.5-10x 50 not the best or most expensive scope on the market by a long way but it has served me well. For all my shooting with the 222 I use Sako 55gr softpoint gameheads.

cheers Roebuck

Erik T.... What rifle, ammo and optics did you use to bring these roebucks to bag? I would think a 6MM or .25 caliber would be ideal for these deer. My latest rifle acquisition is a Remington Model 7 Custom ML in .260 Remington which would also fill the bill for hunting one of these pretty deer. Wink

Very nice bucks indeed.
I notice sprigs of leaves on the buck and in its mouth,I take it this is a tradition,I would be interested to know the significance of this.

once again congrats.

WyoHunter - I was using my Blaser R93 in 6,5x55 with 9.1g RWS Dual Core Bullets; Scope was a Leupold VX3 3.5-10x50.

6mm or .25 would definetively also be enough, but hunting regulations in Germany define that the minimum bullet diameter for wild boar need to be 6,5mmm and wild boar always can come during the roe deer hunt - therefore the 6,5x55, a caliber which I have quite new (since this year febuary), but really have started to like - pleasant to shoot, very good accuracy, enough killing power and no meat damage Smiler

Best regards,

Erik

Roebuck222,

thanks Smiler

Well the sprigs on leaves on the buck and in the mouth is a old German hunting tradition - the twig in the mouth is supposed to be the "last meal" of the buck and the twig on the body is supposed to show that you have shot the deer and now own it - both basically honor the animal and the hunt!

Indeed there is a third twig used as hunting tradition - that's the one the hunter who has shot a deer, boar or fox is putting on his hat to celebrate (and to show the other hunters that he shot something and therefore needs to invite his hunting buddies to a round of beer etc. and to celebrate - literatelly translated "to drink the deer dead" Wink)

(Which we also did a bit espcially with the second one - one of the best roe bucks ever shot so far in the area where I am hunting Smiler)

Best regards,

Erik
