Hunting Equipment in Germany

I will be in Germany in a few months, and would be interested in taking a first hand look at hunting clothing, boots, equipment favored by German/European hunters. I am especially interested in wool garments. Can you folks recommend the dominant makers of quality hunting clothing. In the states, there is a slow trend back to wool garments for its silence, warmth when wet, and "traditional" appeal. However, there are very few options geared specifically toward the hunter. Again, I have all the "synthetic" garments I can stand. It is more traditional fabrics I am interested in.

Boots are also on my shopping list as my favorite pair of cold weather "mid-calf boots are finally worn out. Mendl is the only name I familiar with from US. Are there others I should look for.

Our primary city of travel will be Munich, but excursions elsewhere are not out of the question.

Thank you!

hey,...welcome on board...im dealing for the same search in the opposit direction [Big Grin] .
So maybe we can learn or get informations of each other.

1) The swandri link : http://www.swanndri.co.nz/
1a) german hunting and outdoor shops:

www.kettner.de

or

www.frankonia.de

2)Wool: Overhere we dont wear wool that much, because -as i know- we dont have any trades that offers wool clothings the style you may are looking for. We german hunters are normaly wear LODEN.
Loden is nearly the same like wool, and mostly is made out of rabbit- or other animal hairs or wool (sometimes virgin wool). I think they produce it in different ways, either its wooven and the other way (its called "walken")is somehow like; they do have a big washing mashine where they put the hairs or wool into, then put some water in it and let it tumble.....then they press it under water steam to the garnment. The more this process is repeated th e stronger (warmer) the material gets.
Very famous is loden from austria or tirol ( good brand is Sanderson).
The german manufacturers are (that are good)
1)Rascher , they do build trousers, overtrousers, coats, jackets, vests....
2)and out of Bavaria, Munich (top products hand crafted) forgotten the name [Smile] but think i mean Lodenfrey. but realy not sure about the name.

These products mostly, not to say, only in plain green . Although the colour can verie from gree over dark green to grey or grey-green,..depends where it has been made.
NOT available in camo patterns !!!
But mostly you can get them with goretex membrane.
A goog brand also was ELCH, but the company does no longer exist, and the name was sold to Eduard Kettner. But the quality cant be compared to the original Elch Loden ( comes from Sdtirol).
I think Rascher is a good brand if u look for the moneys value.
Compared to sleeping indian designs or KOM they are realy cheap [Smile]
Apropos,..maybe u can give me a hand.
I bought the King of the mountain (KOM) bird pant in autumn brown and now thinking of getting me the bowman jacket or the hooded sweater. But to be honest the jacket is about 400 Bucks, and the hoddes sweater arbout 317 which is still a lot of money.
Additional problem is, that i like to buy me the cabelas MT 050 extreme insulated whitetail Jacket and the bibs. therefore i dont KOM at all....if i would get the jacket / sweater for a reasonable price it would be okay...
I know that woolrich, and columbia also produce camo wool,...but their pattern doesnt fit to the KOM pattern. Otherwise i would buy me the gallatin jacket and everything would be fine [Smile]
Have u ever worn KOM? Or maybe know where they sell them as special offer [Big Grin] ?
Do u think it makes sense to have a extra wool set to the cabelas MT 050 gear???
Maybe you can bring light in my darkness, by giving me ur suggestion and point of view.
Can i wear wool arround +15 or +20 degrees celsius or are they more suited for cold weather?
cheers Konstantin

What i forgotten to tell you:
good trades are (never tested them but only heared good things about)
the french brand le chameau, beside rubber boots they build hunting apparels too.

Meindl,...i owned some fgor about 20 years. the first one hold up 15 years the second pair 5 years. What ive heared that Meindl shoes do have some problems with the "Schuhsohle" (schuhsohle= the part of the shoe with witch you walk,..the vibram...part) The "schuhsohle" comes off after wearing them realy often. But on the other hand i have to say, that i send my shoes to Meindl and they fixed them. They put some new vibrams on it - for free- and send them back to me. Not a bad service [Smile]

But i now bought me the Hanwag boots. Realy nice.

You should start in the hunting clothes business [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

I have looked for Swandri for a very long time. I wonder if loden would sell that good in USA?

Hey Johan,
i think the US hunters are not familar to loden, although woolrich is producing some things out of wool, that are very similar to , what we know, as loden .
And mashine washable,..but to be honest i do machine wash my loden too, although the manufacturer says only dry clean.
Cold or 30 degrees Celsius Wool washing cycle (no tumbling!!!!), and after they come out wet, stretch them..and u will se they look brand new.

What makes me wonder is- that as a friend from the states was here last year- he was realy suprised about the loden gear. He said something like: you wont find such -high quality- hunting gear in the states!.... if u compare the prices US / Germany ..the stuff in the states is much cheaper. Although some companies, like King of the mountain/ sleeping indian designs, takes realy much for their virgin wool hunting gear.
Funny at all, if this wool hunting stuff of the both mentioned firms where cheaper,..i think i would get me some more of their stuff. But to be honest, for a pair of bibs nearly [Confused] 500$ [Confused] it not only expensive,...its something like rude / unpolite. But maybe thats just my humble opinion.

cheers

Konstantin,

I appreciate all the information.

The steamed and pressed stuff is felt. Was used in boots as an insulating liner, in hats, shirts, etc. All sorts of fibers can be felted.

Here in the U.S., Woolrich and Filson make some outstanding heavy wool clothing that is warm and wears well and comes in a variety of colors.

One of those colors is "loden green" sometimes shortened to just "loden". It is a dark green. Unfortunately, I can't say more than that as my sight is color deficient and I can't discern shades of color all that well. Has kept me from doing much electronics work. [Big Grin]

Again, thanks for all the information.
