Thinking of getting me a rifle in 243 winchester for roe-deer, is this a good caliber for roe...

My experience is fairly limited, but I use a .243, with 90grain Sako ammo. most of what I shoot is fallow and it deals with them very effectively. The best thing about it is that I can stalk deer and lamp foxes with the same rifle. This always helps consistency as you get more chances to get aquainted with the rifle. At the end of the day, they will all do the job if you put the pointy bit in the right place. FB

It is one of the best calibers for roe deer. Ive using it many years and works fine. Good hunt. Alberto

I have used it on a dozen or so roe deer. It works fine, in fact very well, lightning kills are the norm although there is usually a fair bit of meat damage. Even though it is considered to be a light round and therefore ideal of these little deer, I consider it to be still a little too fast for these delicate little deer. Something along the lines of a 5,6x57R or even 5,6x52R would less devastating. Consider that a .243 will pass through at any angle you wish to take your deer from. If a devastating kill is what you're after, then go for it. Otherwise try loading some heaver bullets a little slower.

Far and away the most favoured rifle in UK for roe. Also the smallest allowed calibre. The 85 g hpbt sierra is a good bullet in this calibre for roe.
