Thought I'd get you's all ready for the upcoming Rut or Blattzeit. Here's a story from a few years ago, remember to check for eye teeth, Waidmannsheil, Dom.

Unique Buck
A Unique Rehbock from Rheinland Pfalz, Germany, May 2004

After a day of work, I decided to go hunting in the evening. I loaded up my rucksack and rifle and drove out to the Revier, parked the truck, gathered my gear and headed up the trail to the Hochsitz. I was quietly walking down the trail, taking my time, when I spotted a Reh. I crouched down and watched it, determining that it was a Schmalreh, but the position was wrong, so I watched it amble off into the brush. I slowly and quietly got up in the Hochsitz, and started picking apart and scanning the woods for signs of wildlife. The view from the Hochsitz was beautiful and it was a nice evening:

I didn’t see anything, so every few minutes I’d scan again. Often I will spot game a distance off that is not detectable without the aid of binoculars. After about an hour in the seat I spotted a Reh, deep back in the shadows of a thicket. It was hard to get a good look at, but I determined that it was a buck, and a good Abschuss, Ungerade Sechser. I cranked up the scope, and waited, and waited and waited -- for the shot I wanted. It was a difficult shot because the buck was wandering through brush, behind trees, and angles that didn’t offer a good clean shot. After about 15 minutes, the buck offered a good shot. It appeared he had heard something and was looking off to the side, so I concentrated and touched off the shot, of which I estimated to be between 80 and 90 meters. At the shot, the buck ran off, which didn’t alarm me as I knew I had a good Blatt shot on it. I relaxed for about 15 minutes, and as it was fairly early yet, decided to go find it and field dress it. I went to the spot where it was standing when I shot, and found bright blood with parts of lung, always a good sign. After a short trail of about 30 meters, I found the buck.

I knelt by it for a minute, gave it the Letzte Bissen, and field dressed it. After completing the dressing, I carried it back to the Hochsitz and went back to hunting. Later on I saw a Rehgeiss, still carrying, and another Schmalreh, but it was getting quite dark. I was actually in an area with a good chance for Wild Boar, but I didn’t see any that evening. I loaded the buck in the truck, drove to the Cool House to hang it, and went home. After cleaning and boiling the skull I made a unique discovery, that the buck had one Grandeln, or Eye Tooth, which is a very uncommon occurrence for Rehwild, and completed my successful hunt of the “Unique Rehbock from Rheinland Pfalzâ€.

A great story - it has a wonderful German flavour to it

Is there any chance of one of our European bretheren providing a translation for the technical German?

Mouse, I've actually done nothing with it, I don't even think I've put the skull on a plaque yet. It's not like a Rothirsch Grandeln, it's more pointed, I would say because there's nothing for it to rub against.

1894, a couple translations for ya.
Revier - Hunting Area
Hochsitz - Highseat
Schmalreh - Yearling Roe female
Geiss - Doe
Letzte Bissen - Last Bite - tradition of placing branch from one of five native trees in Germany in the animal's mouth
Ungerade Sechser - 5 point, i.e., 3 points on one side and 2 on other antler
Blatt - for lack of a better term, a shot in the Boiler Room!

Think I've covered most of them for ya, WH Dom.
