I have my own ideas about the practice of placing feed (root crops/concentrate feednuts/apples) in open areas to entice deer into open areas so that they can be observed/culled, just interested if any body else has had experience or knowledge of such practices?

Have used saltlicks - but more successfully, carrot and turnip on a known path to 'stop' Fallow deer mid trot. The few seconds halt for inspection is enough time to select a target and squeeze off a round. Roe seem to respond well to willow whips placed on the edge of rides - pulls them out into view very successfully. rgds Ian Just taking my rifle for a walk!........

Nightwalker uk never shoot them on the feed our experience is they become nocturnal feeders, and associate the stock with danger! Get them when they are on the way to the feed... root turnips seem to work well, feed blocks and the like seem to get pissed on by the foxes and nothing will go near them.. regards griff

Interesting points raised so far, anything from our Scandinavian stalkers? This is where I first heard about feeding points, to the extent of offering feed in a covered trough with a rail at the appropriate height (in this instance for Roe deer) to dislodge antlers that were on the verge of casting. I thought this topic would have brought more responce? Ethics? I am with you Griff on the opinion of turning species into nocturnal feeders, especially as I am now dealing with Fallow...

I have often thought of it but never got round to it. I have enough difficulty keeping on top of clearing branches on rides and around high seats...... I would like to plant some maize in a couple of spots but the effort involved is too great.
