Can anybody tell me how products from other European company;s compare to the likes of Zeiss, Swaro and S&B?

I am wondering about Pecar but also H&R and Nickle Supra(sp?) and any others that you know of

The reason i asked is that I quite often see used Pecar scopes at what seem quite reasonable prices, but I am wondering if i would be buying 1970's scope technology?

Regards,

Pete

Some of the best scopes in the world and still affordable.
Try them!

kaps are also very good:

My Kahles 6x42 was fully the equal of my current Swaro's. Excellent scope second hand.

The Gerhardt I tried was, no two ways about it, rubbish. Terrible vignetting and white out. To make matters worse the UK importer (JLS) are arseholes of the first water. Huge restocking fee.Others have tried their 4x32s had problems and really poor service.

I have no experience of Pecar but they are very long in the tube.

For the small amount of money saved I think Swaro, zeiss, S&B or Kahles are the best bet.

1894,

I don't disagree with you about your choice of scopes...my question was really sparked by looking what what was available secondhand on Gunmart. Pecar scopes are quite common but i have never actually seen one and I don't know anybody who uses one, hence my question.

Apart from scoping by 9.3x62mm i am also thinking about getting a x4 scope. Its normal use would be on my rimfire but is secondary use would be as a "spare" for my centerfires...Even though its going to be used mostly on a rimfire, I would still like a decent scope...a used Swaro, S&B or Zeiss would be nice but a little expensive, perhaps a used x4 Meopta (I think they made those?)might be another alternative. York Guns is also carrying a used x4 Docter (i am not keen on that) and a couple of x4 Pecar...

Regards,

Pete

Pete,

The parralax on rimfire scopes is usually set for 50m, for centrefire scopes usually at 100m. This may have some baring on using your back-up centrefire scope on your rimfires. Just something to think about.

They are also OK: http://www.docter-germany.com/zf/index.htm

It is the former Zeiss Jena company.
You get good quality for reasonable price.

For driven hunts they offer a nice small red-dot:

Here you get it ready for different mounts (weaver also).

Best regards

Pete.
I belive some of the early pecars were not self centering.
If you want a cheap scope? I have a weaver3x9x40 on a steel tube its old buts still hold zero even on the 25. I could even sell you the Kahles when I find a Mil-dot to replace it.

Another vote for Kaps. I feel they are the best on the market. My dealings with Pecar has been limited, make sure you get the perma centre cross hairs.

In regards to Gehardt Nickl, the Super Magnum intruiges me, but I believe they use an imported glass, Japenese? I am told the quality is excellent. Kaps uses Schott glass.

It is pretty tough to beat Zeiss. I wish we could get fixed powers back in the US. An a 1" VM/v in 1 to 4 with about 4,5" of eye relief

Meopta are excellent and there are any number of S&B or Swaro 4x around at excellent value. While for perfection 4x might be a little high for running moose/boar etc it is excellent as an allround compromise and has the wonderful fiddle free factor!

Pete,

Try this link Macleods Speak to Gregor, he owns the place, is more than a little kmowledgable and is a shooter who actually uses the kit. I have bought several second hand S&B from him and am well pleased with them. Hope this is of some use.

Sauenjager,

Thanks for the Docter Optic telescope website. I had been going to the parent company's site and it did not show any links to the telescope section.

Good hunting!

I have a Meopta 1000 4x32 with 1 inch steel tube and 1cm adjustments(not a ery common combination!)I'am have not used it ,but i'am going to put it on a BRNO .22,but it will be my "spare" scope for my big game rifle.
A bit on the heavy side, but very solid.Even if it's not a Zeiss i think the optics are very good.It has a reticule nr 4 ,perhaps not the best for rimfire, but very good at dusk and dawn.
