Hi all,

I was looking at some of the high seats at Cabellas, and even with shipping and a bit of the dreaded tax they don't look too bad vaue.

Has anyone ordered this kind of thing from abroad?

For less than 100 € for wood, bolts, paint from your market for construction material you can build a nice seat yourself.

I make some with a 2,50 m ladder with an articulation for easier car transport, the whole thing is build in components (seat plus ladder) in my yard, haul it in my car, in the woods I just assemble the components.

Just PM if you are interested, I send you a parts list and pictures of the construction process.

I make mine out of 1" box tube.
Works out about £40 each IF you know somebody who can weld! and they are ALOT more difficult to vandalise or steal than wood ones and they weight about the same aswell.

Hi Amir,

Thanks for the offer but I couldn't ask someone to do me the 10 seats that I need like that!!! You'd be there all week.

I have a firm in one of the buildings at the shoot who make gates out of box section and they could probably do it for me. I just thought the metal would be expensive. I'll check it out on saturday after stalking and see what they price it at.

Given my lack of time, (and practical ability) I figured that buying and delivering directly would be easiest.

no problem fella, you want ten I’ll round up the boys! The offer was sincere though as you need 10 tongue in cheek! I love projects me...

Should you go to the local chaps make sure you have a design or at least some drawings with measurements for them to look at or whatever price they estimate will be highly speculative. Keep the design simple to minimise amount of metal used and don’t go overboard on box section wall thickness as it causes the price to rise exponentially as the amount of metal increases exponentially also.

For a one man seat something made of 1 – 1.5mm BDMS box section of 25-30mm should be the best. Bright Drawn Mild Steel is nice and easy to prime and paint.

Does it need to be freestanding or lean to?

Gents,

Please, please no more DIY encouragement for FB...

I've just had Mrs FB on the phone all of a panic that he will kill himself... if not when he starts actually wielding hammer and saw, certainly if he ever tries to climb into said construction once its built! Big Grin

Regards,

Pete

Pete isnt joking.

The last time I was puttig a drinker sysem inot a Partridge pen , I needed to drill a hole in one side of the plastic pipe to fit the saddle clip to it. I managed to go through both sides and my thumb with a 2mm drill bit...

I really need to buy these things ready made and take out insurance before I try and climb into them.

I was thinking about the Shed thnig my mate has and tere are two places I could put one up on a new shoot. Te fields are kind of U hsaped so I either need a free stander or a hide of some kind to be able to cover all sides. the shed thing is a better choice as it won't get leaned on and broken by the cattle.

Fallow, just out of interest, how did you intend to have the stands shipped US -> UK?? Are they broken down in pieces small enough to be accepted by the postal service, UPS or the like??

One of the (ladder) stands I had been looking at weighs no less than 130 lbs! some of the tripod stands are close to 200 lbs...

Did you have an estimate on what it would cost you to ship (one or more) stands??

I ask, because I have also eyed those stands. But I somehow always imagined container shipment would be required...

if you're worried about safety and consequently liability Kiri you may have to splash out! What mho says is very true, my father's company source furniture from the us ocassionaly and it usually costs about the same in shipping as the product itself.

A compromise might be to get your gatemaker chaps to copy an existing design, to the same specs on materials etc., and get them to knock up 10. If their welding is any good at all it is bound to be at least as safe as the design it was "inspired" by and you save delivery costs.

it doesn't take 10 times the amount of time to build 10 seats as it does one as you make all the ladders then all the seats etc.

Good luck!

It takes me about 4 hrs cutting and welding to make one seat (but i`m in no rush, coffee breaks and dam phone) then about 1/2hour to prime and hammerite it.If i do a few at a time i can cut the time down big time.

Have you looked at the X3M1 single highseats from sportsman gun centre? I beleive they are £99 each including delivery at the moment. I've just put one up and it certainly seems well worth the money. Also the free standing ones are really good quality.
