This saturday was the second last day of hunting roe this season, we where 9 hunters out, three from the hunting team and the rest vere invited. We had three dogs, dachthounds with us, Astrid and Abbe and then the neighbours dog as well.

The morning started nice and calm ie no wind and with in 10 min the dog, Abbe has a single roe up and he is driving it,

the roe managed to pass between me and Carl another guy in my hunting team tvice just beyond reach, 25 meters is max at roe with shotgun during a driven hunt.

As we broke for lunch, a fire, some sausages and a spot of tea we had had another two roes driven that had not come within range.

The last drive of day came to start, with in 5 minutes Astrid once again had the roe, 4 of the on the run, the small herd and dog passed by my stand well within reach but as they were heading for Carls spot I held my fire,

within minutes a single shot rang out and then moments later the crackle of the radio, I shot a roe, it´s down but not dead.

Well the dog and the three remaing roes took of and I reported over the radio that I was moving ower to Carl to sort out his kill.

The roe had to be finished of, god thing I had a knife and then I had a joyful time teaching Carl UK style grallocking, Ian and Artemis you know what I mean

this is a proud Carl and his first ever roe.

By the way I belive that I am even prouder, I was responible for setting out the shooters and as a good friend I had my mate in the king´s seat so to speak.

Oh well a short report from Sweden.

Best regards to you all.

/Chris

Chris, congratulations to your friend on his first roe. Please warn him that it could be addictive Big Grin. Are you forced to use shotguns? Buckshots or slugs?

P.S. Here, only rifles or shotguns and slugs are allowed, for all the big game hunting.

Here, driven roe hunt is rifle only. If one shoots responsably that means that you see a lot of them and shoot little, usually when they stand still every couple of meters or so.

Running boar are much easier to hit, of course.

Wildboar, no rules, shotguns are used mostly due to short ranges that are involved, the forrest is thick and the fact that they do take roe with a lot of authority when used correctly,

no buckshot or slugs used, slugs and buckshots are a no, no on roe in Sweden, US nr 3, 32 grams Gyttorp special in a Husqvarna model 130 I belive is the correct recepie in this case.

When I can I bring my drilling along, shots in the shot barrel, US nr 3:s or perhaps nr 1:s if it´s a cold winter and a round in the 7x57R barrel, that tend to make all shots awaliable/makeable.

Slugs/brenneke are only allowed in "single barreled guns in hunt for fox, hare, and all smaller game as well as mufflon and boar, if in pen/high fence then also allowed for fallow and reds", strange rules well yes but we all have some oddities in our game/shooting rules.

Addictive, well yes, he texted to me this morning and was wondering what kind of dog he should get....

We have one last hunt remaining, 31/1, I´ll report back from after that.

Best regards Chris

First let me congratulate you to a well written story - as usual! Smiler

Then to something very unusual!

Not quite right..

NFS 2002:18
7 §

Sorry for al English speakers but I won't translate all of it...

The sum of it is that singlebarreled shotguns with slugs/brenneke can be used for hunting wild boar, fallow and mufflon - nothing else.

As the act of killing a previosly wounded animal is not considered hunting slug/brenneke can also be used to put down those animals.

In Belgium, big game may be shot with rifles shooting bullets > 6,5 mm E100 220 J. Shotguns slugs > 20 ga are also allowed but practically never seen as they're frowned upon in most hunting parties. Hunting (99% drive hunting with beaters and hounds) being very expensive in this small overpopulated country, it sometimes gets so "exclusive" as to restrict armament to double rifles only...

Thank you Jeff,

after a prolonged hanging, I went over to Carls house yesterday to help him cut down the carcass, he is doing great and really didn´t need my help but it´s always great to spend to time with a mate.

We are heading out to hunt the last time on the 31, Ill be back with a report of that event later on.

Best regards Chris
