Would anyone familiar with the Kongsberg 393 comment about them for a USA novice? There are quite a few for sale suddenly and I would like to know more about them. "Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

I have owned one in 6,5x55, a friend has a .300WM and used to own a .30-06. The rifles are made in Norway, at Kongsberg, based on the original Swedish Lakelander rifles. They are conventional bolt action rifles with some unusual features. The bolt has three locking lugs that lock in the action (not the barrel), 60 degree bolt lift. The bolt is in one piece, there is no detachable bolthead, dismantling is by removing the blot lever itself, de-cocking and removing the firingpin assembly, actually very easy to do and totally reliable. Extractor and ejektor is Sako style, push feed with large extractor and plunger ejector. Safety is a conventional side-safety with three positions. The magazine is a mannlicher style (roll?) with a knob for emptying the magazine, there is no bottom metall. Adjustable match trigger. The action has weaver basers milled into it for easy mounting of a scope. My rifle, and my friends rifles, has been very accurate, totally reliable with an excellent trigger. They are easy to shoot well and have good barrels. I modified my rifles stock a bit because I did not like the high MC stock design, too high for me, but my friend is very comfortable with this design. The action is extremely smooth and fast to operate. I can strongly recommend these rifles, that are still being made here in Norway, and the only reason I don´t own one for the moment is that I wanted a light rifle in the 6,5x55, the 393 is a "full size" 7,5-8 pound rifle wich is fine in .300WM or even .30-06 but a little heavy for a 6,5, and because I wanted another rifle in .375 wich is to long for the 393 action. I plan on getting another when need and funds permit. Tron

Thanks for the information. I am looking at one in 338 Winchester magnum so the weight would be useful. The stock style is not for me, either but that can be changed as you did. "Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

I did not know Kongsberg build rifles that were not based on old Mauser actions. I have one of the 885 M59F1 that were build for the british market with the serial GB000xx. Could you please post some pictures of the 393.

I am going by CDNN next week to look at one. That ad is what got me curious. They look like a lot of rifle for under $600. Unfortunately, I cannot download a picture from their pdf catalog but if you go to http://www.cdnninvestments.com you can download the catalog for yourself. The picture isn't great but its the only one I know of. "Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

tiggertate, I am in the process of moving in July but I would be very interested in what the rifles are like. Please do post your opinions here. Thanks in advance and good hunting! Mel, CDNN wouldn't let me in to look at the Kongsberg. It seems they are mail order only unless you have a badge or signed FFL on your person which, unfortunately, I did not. Stupid me for not calling ahead, I guess. "Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.
