7 mm Super Express vom Hofe Gentlemen, I was wondering if any hunters still use this old vintage hotshot in Europe? Thanks.

Hi NitroX, I never heard of any guy using this calibre. It's mostly known in books, not in the real life. By the By, does it really exist? Or is it intox from the Germans? J B de Runz Be careful when blindly following the masses ... generally the "m" is silent

Hello NitroX, i know at least one guy among my hunting fellows which is still using the 7x66 Super Express vom Hofe. You might also run across some older guns on the used gun market in Austria or Germany. IMHO it´s very close to dead though, as new guns are custom job-only now, there is one (pricy) supply for ammunition and reloading is not very much cheaper. Also several competitors provide equal or better performance at much lower cost (7mm Weatherby, 7mm STW or 7mm Rem Ultra to name a few). The same is true for the other vom Hofe Cartridges (5,6x51, 7x75R and 9,5x66) around. Regards Roman

I know there are modern equivalents or faster ones such as the STW, but "Shooting Times Western" or the "Remington Ultra Laundry Washer" doesn't sound as good as "Super Express Vom Hofe" ! I Like a bit of history and vintage cartridges too. The originals, not the "new" "first ever" modern pretenders. I was wondering if any are still in use and more so can brass still be obtained for it? Eurohunter Who supplies the 'pricey' ammunition? I like the sound of the rest of the vom Hofe range too.

Yes and yes. They are outdated, unncessary, and a monument of salesmanship and number crunching. Only the very recent 9,5x66 SEvH has merit and reason, in my eyes. Hello NitroX, if you don´t link "me too" or pretending cartridges, you should also not care about the 7x66 cartridge, since it was invented as late as 1956 by Walter Gehmann. It had a lot of predecessors in the "7mm Mag performance" class, just remember the 280 Ross (invented 1907), 275 H&H (1912) or if you prefer metric cartridges, the 7x73 vom Hofe (1931) or the 280 Halger Magnum (1930s). I don´t know about the supply in Australia with 7x66 brass. Here in Europe there are few suppliers for both factory ammunition (Gehmann) and brass (Gehmann and Horneber). Price for 7x66 brass is appr. 2 to 3,5 Euros per case! If you are interested have a look at Johannsen in Germany :http://www.johannsen-jagd.de/seite093bis101.pdf. They usually have vom Hofe brass in stock. Cheers Roman

A friend of mine inherited a very nice Mauser 66 in this caliber.

Roman I thought it was much older than 1956. At least the '30's or '40's. Maybe I was thinking of the 7x73 though.

Good afternoon to all . I apologize for the delay in the answer but I haven't see this post until today. I have a 7x66 SEVH ,is a mauser 66 with two barrels ,the other in 300 Mag. Really I was more impresedwith the lore of a german caliber than with the reality of it. Trying different combinations I arribe to 3200 fps with a Sirra 160 grs Gameking. Later when I saw the abuse in the cases (and the expensive they are) I change for a more conservative load and with 173 gr H=Mantle bullets. I used this year and get three red stag with them at very large distance in a culling work for a friend. Well if you need some more ask me sincerely yours Gtrotz
