Great little stag. How do these little brutes manage to cover a Red hind?

Gabe, the Sika were still whistling here last weekend. Hell of a sound on a quiet evening.

Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they are not out to get you....

Bog,

The stags are right in the middle of their whistleing just now, it's like a choir practice of an evening. I called this one in with a sceerey elk caller, in fact had I been a little sharper I would have had a second stag that was coming in behind this one.

Toby,

yes it was the 6.5 / 129 Hornady interlock combo and no never did see the Roebuck again. You OK over there in dear beer land?

Alex,

I called that stag, and the one that was following him in with a Screery elk call. You can manage a pretty convincing three whistle sequence which works very well. This one came in like a train until he stopped and presented the shot. The second one was not put off by the shot, T8 moderated, it was my mate moving, to mark the position where we lost sight of the shot stag, that stopped him and sent him away. So if my mate had spotted the other one we could have had two answering the call no bother at all. The whole thing including watching a hind for a couple of minutes when we got there, listening to the stags whistleing, me calling and a fifteen minute wait after the shot only took 30 minutes.
Hope this helps

John

DJM,

No it is not a borders stag he is a Highlander, I don't know what he weighs, I will weigh him before he is skinned though. As for runners I have been very lucky that is about an average distance for stags, having said that the next one wil now not stop until the next County! The hinds do not usully get that far. You are right about the stags and how they will answer almost anything when in full rut, I did hear that some of the FC people were out in pairs and sitting back to back so as not to miss those coming through the back door. Don't know how true that is but it sounds reasonable.

thanks,

i will maybe look into getting one,
probably missed the boat for this rut though.

having had nothing to do with sika, how did you guys develop your call sounds?

im sure just being on the ground listening would be a good start, is there a knack?
