Gentlemen
What does this () monetary symbol stand for? The reason I ask is that I followed a link to a booking agent called Diana I believe, clicked on the USA flag, and the prices quoted had this symbol.
What would this be in US dollars?

Also Ill just ask, what would I expect to pay for a decent hunt? (Red Stag) Im not looking for extravagance just decent hunting and the opportunity to see how it is done in a different country.

Would anyone be willing to swap a Whitetail hunt in the U.S.? (Louisiana) Especially a bow hunt. I hunt mostly public land but have access to private land also. Is this just a silly idea?

Thanks
Shawn

It's the European equivalent of the $ dollar symbol for currency. It's just plain called the Euro... I think the symbol was supposed to represent the e and c (european currency) super imposed upon each other.

Shawn, (red deer) stag hunts in most of Continental Europe are subject to trophy fees, which increase RAPIDLY as the trophy size increase. You can get into >5000$ territory for the trophy fee alone, if you are lucky enough to nail a stag with a trophy approaching 10kg (or more than 200 CIC points in Serbia or the Csech Republic, they still use CIC to score the trophy). The sky is the limit, so it is also possible to shoot stags in the 20-30K$ range - e.g. in Hungary for a 12-14 kg stag. Now I don't know what your budget is like, but to me that gets a bit steep....

All is not lost though. Stag hunting in much of Europe can be a bunch more reasonable if you are prepared to settle for a somewhat smaller trophy. Poland usually does not have the biggest of stags, but they have great hunting for stags in the vicinity of 6-8 kg. 8 kg can still get a bit steep, but 6-7 kg can still be a very reasonable trophy, and at a semi-payable price. Shopping around can help find better prices, but if you are not from Europe, and you don't know a specific hunting area, I'd suggest going through a large hunting agency (like Diana), they send so many people in the field that they have good hunting areas, even though you may not get the very best of prices.

Alternatively: go stag hunting in Scotland. There you usually pay for the number of stags taken, and not for their trophy size. So if you are not looking for a particular trophy, but for tough, honest hunting Scotland might be an option. Don't expect big trophies though, nice trophies do exist, but most of what is shot in Scotland is, well, not so spectacular in terms of trophy size...

Another alternative: Argentina.

redstag can be hunted in quite alot of countries. Central Europe, U.K, Argentine and New Zeeland or Australia. I guess they are in a few more places I can't think of right now [Roll Eyes]

You can do a really good deal in Scotland or Poland hungary, or Serbia depending on your contacts. I have a friend who hunts in Hungary and they got an amazing variety of trophy sizes of stags.

In Scotland a 12 pointer a royal and is not impossible to find, but you will have to climb a few hills for it [Big Grin]

Decide were you want to go, throphy size and how much your budget is.

Good luck

Ahhh...Budget low. But from what I have seen on the Diana site the hunt they offer for Red Stag, that is kind of a self guided hunt, is right up my ally. That is if I'm reading the prices right.

quote:
30-06-2003 Red Stag Offer - Scotland

We still have a few weeks available at some of our well known Scottish estates and hunting areas. Among other things the exciting and challenging "Stalking on Your Own" on the Cowal peninsula in the west of Scotland.

Our price offer is as follows:
* 4 days hunting on your own with no limits, but with a small trophy fee for stagv * 7 days accommodation at a cottage on a self-catering basis * Ferry Amsterdam-Newcastle return incl. 1 car up to 1,85 m. in height for every 2-4 persons. 4-berth cabin

Price per hunter ONLY 790,00
Trophy fees:
Red deer stag
0-4 points 0,00
5-6 points 20,00
7-8 points 40,00
9-10 points 60,00
11 points and over 80,00
Roebuck 0,0Price per hunter ONLY 790,00

Now that is less than 1thousand U.S.(what are the chances of two 11 pt. trophies [Razz] )
Add to that about 1 thou. for airfare. That is still half what a guided elk hunt is in Colorado or New Mexico.
I'm sure that I would need to rent a car and also have food expenses.
What else am I leaving out? Would it be very expensive to bring my own rifle? I would'nt mind the paper work, but if it coast $250 extra in permits thin I may give it a second thought.

I will also add that this is still in the dream stage but would be easily attainable by next year or the year after.
I will admit that since about a year ago, when I realized that ya'll still hunted/stalked in the U.K. [Embarrassed] , that I have really been bitten by the bug to hunt Red Deer in Scotland & Roe in southern England.
thanks
Shawn

Bluetic,

I can honestly say I have never come across "self guided" commercial hunts on the stags in Scotland before and the trophy fees seem very cheap too...Generally, what you guys term as guided hunts start at around 250 per day with accomadation ect on top..I am not sure what type of trophy you get for that, but I would think "representitive" at best...I would really double check what your getting here although Dana is a reputable company...

If you want to fly in direct, I would think Edinburgh or Aberdeen would be closer for you...Unless you are "guided" by someone you won't be able to borrow a rifle on the "Estate Rifle" facility and if you are bringing one over, you need someone in the UK to "sponsor" you; I would think Dana would have a UK representive who would do this...I am not sure what the permit costs from the Government, but I would imagine its under $50...what Dana would charge for doing the appropriate paper work to facilitate this, I don't know..
A rifle in the .243-30-06 range is ideal. If you want to take both a stag and a roe buck , you really need to be thinking of mid Sepetember to mid October when both species are in season and with a little fine tuning you should catch the red rut...

Although the woodland Roebuck stalking in Southern England is really something else with good trophies available, beautiful countryside, it is getting very expensive for the visitor. For guided hunts (again most are for visitors) ,expect to pay 150-250 per day plus trophy fees. If you are on a budget, I would suggest you save your travelling costs, and take your roe in Scotland. You get decent trophies up there too and the stalking is usually a bit more away from the beaten path...

If you *really* want to stalk in Southern England, to get best value, I would book say 3 or 4 days stalking for Roebuck with the option to take maybe a Fallow or a muntjac buck if you get your Roe early....

Regards,

Pete

PS check your PM and take a look at http://www.deer-uk.com for more general info on stalking in the UK..

Hi,
Although I am surprised to see an unguided stag hunt being advertised, it does sound very exciting as many people I know complain that following a stalker's bum until he tells you to shoot can be an anticlimax...
Does this Diana consultant have a proper website?
By the way, the trophy quality in Scotland is quite low compared to Central/Eastern Europe as the forage is not as rich, but people enjoy the beautiful countryside and high success rates.

Boghossian,
In Hungary and Romania is used to evaluate the weight of the trophy and make the hunter pay for the weight. The operation is made 24hours after the trophy preparation and boiling.

Hungarian prices start from 260Euro for a 2.5kg trophy and are regularly quoted to 11kg that costs 8100 Euro. Then every 10grams thera are a +40Euro to pay. Add 400 Euro for board and lodging and 8Euro for Resort admission tax.

Romania is more expensive, prices start from 1500 Euro for a 6kg trophy and get 9100 Euro for a 11.5KG trophy, and then every 10 grams over 11.5kg are 60Euro/10grams to pay.
Add 1900Euro for a luxury full inclusive accomodation, trophy air transport and hunting license.

Hunting during the rut is an exceptional emotion,
I hope that you'll enjoy it.

Feel free to ask me more.

I'll be back later.
bye
