I had read years ago that France forbids the use by civilians of any cartridge that was used by a(ny) military.

I don't know if they consider the .308 Win. to be the same as the 7.62x51 NATO.

Semi-automatics chambered for the .308 are not legal in Spain.

Not sure about the 308 in France. Relaxations imho were only for 30-06. Better doublecheck.

I lived in Spain for 2 year and Italy for 2 and half years.

At the time I lived in Spain you could not own a 308, 223, 7.62-39, 50 BMG and maybe a few others. The Spanish hunters are limited to 6-8 center fire rifles (I can't remember the number). I don't think 22 rifles count, and I know air rifles don't count.

I only had one rifle, one shotgun and one air rifle when I lived there and only figured out how to hunt a couple of times.

It was fairly common in the Spanish hunting magazines to interview famous Spanish hunters and ask what they owned.

NATO forces in Italy were not allowed to own firearms, and I lived in Sicily which made things worse.

I was stationed in Vicenza, Italy, from 1975 to 1978, in the 1st Bn (ABN) 509th Infantry. I bought 4 Beretta shotguns, 2 revolvers, and 1 rifle while I was there and brought them home. We could not own military calibers, such as .223 and .308, but it was not too hard to get permission to buy a firearm. I imported them with my household goods when I transferred back to the US. I do not know the current laws.

Both France and Belgium had prohibitions on "weapons capable of chambering ammunition in military calibres" so 7.62 NATO marked AND .308 Winchester marked rifles were prohibited. As well as .30-06 and etc., etc..

The secondary effect was that even if YOU had one...by some priviledge of being "NATO Forces" or wgat not...you couldn't get ammunition as, with no domestuc ownership of such rifles, no loca/ shops stocked the ammunition.

Thus the popularity not only of 7x64 in its own right but also of .280 Remington in Model 740 and.760 rifles, but also 7mm-08.

Belgian law changed several years ago. French law in 2012. Although a small number of current militsry calibres remain prohibited all the old WWII calibres are now liberalised.

I was stationed in Italy 2005-2008. No guns could be owned by NATO forces.

Spain, yes we had the same limits as the Spanish.

I am glad I was in Italy in the 70s. I was able to bring home 2 nice pairs of Berettas, a pair of SxS and a pair of over-unders. I got fitted for them at the factory.

I am hunting in Spain in 2018. I asked my outfitter, Mr. Carrizosa, if there were any restrictions on the .308 and he told me he did not know of any.

It was only France to my knowledge where .308 was prohibited. It's now obviously fine.

I know for certain that .308 has been popular in Germany for decades.

No problem with the 308 now in Italy, also with semiauto rifles, but with magazines limited to 5 rounds
