Unfortunately it is very difficult for a layman to determine if he can send a particular product out of the country. Dual use products like gun parts are even more sensitive. If the employee at Cabelas who ships the product inadvertenly violates U.S. export laws, it is a felony and he will spend time in federal prison. A person in California got a felony conviction for mailing a rifle barrel to a friend in Australia.

I think Cabelas is just thinking it is better safe than sorry. And we wonder why our economy has not recovered since 9.11.

I know about , as I can't get nothing from Cabelas or Brownells , really can't understand the law , as the world it's not more safe if I can't get a barrel a scope or a stock from Cabelas, maybe USA government thinks the only source of gun parts are USA ? , as if here in Europe we don't produce barrels scopes and firearms , or if you need to buy ONLY in USA to get an AK 47 / 74 rifle or parts .... silly , we lost a lot of good priced gun parts , and america gun manufacturers a good market .

So you mean that a private person (friend) can't send gunparts or bullets to a foreign address from the US? Even as a gift?

we here in Australia are being held to prices which are nothing short of extortional, but don't bloody well complain because if your not happy you can wait 3 months from when he next places his order(when he gets enough orders) and hope the exchange rate is still good.He holds the almighty FFL!

Griff,
Try Brownells. Slightly cheaper than Cabelas for the Choate stock, anyway. Only seem to have it in green, if that matters. Cat. No. 159-220-601 or 159-220-602. And they'll do the export paperwork for a reasonable fee. $5 for shippers export declaration+ $10 for the export license.

Not without getting a US State Department Export License for the goods. And that in turn demands a copy of the Import Permit [if applicable] for the country of destination. This applies to any consignments of gun parts of over US$100 wholesale value, and all consignments containing actions, barreled actions, pistol frames, revolver cylinders, barrels, and barrel liners. Also all consignments of brass and projectiles.

Don't know how possible it is for a non-FFL holder to get the Export License, but it wouldn't be easy, and isn't quick in any case. The extra cost and delays involved in the process, could well be why Cabela's have decided it's not worth the trouble.
