Question about hunting Italy

Hello everyone, this is my first post here on what looks to be a great forum. I will tell you about myself before I ask my question.

I am a fairly new hunter; I'm 26 years old and started hunting 3 years ago. After I took the hunter training and firearms safety testing here in Vancouver, Canada where i am from, I mostly became self taught at hunting learning by reading and watching videos to learn the basics, then getting out in the bush to learn my skills. Lately I have been accompanying more experienced hunters and learning even more.

I have been very successful so far, my tally includes 1 moose, 1 Black bear, 5 Mule deer all 4x4 or better, and a large number of grouse and rabbits.

That’s a bit about me, now I have a question about hunting near Ancona Italy. My sister will be getting married next June in Santo Stefano, Treia, Italy. Her fiancé’s aunt and uncle live on a small villa there with a large amount of land. Apparently there are many wild boar in that area and a lot of other game.

Is it possible for someone from outside Italy to get a hunting license and hunt with a resident, or would I be required to hunt with a guide? I have no idea what the seasons are over there, this will be my first trip to Italy and my soon to be brother in laws uncle seemed interested tat I join him on a hunt.

Please let me know any info that you have on this subject. I will keep searching in the archives.

Thanks for your time.

Rhys

Hi Rhys.

Im sure some locals will be up shortly to confirm - but I think the seasons for large game will be closed in June. Frowner

To whet your appetite - there are some wonderful wildboar in the area - as well as Roe deer, maybe even a few Red Deer that far east.

My experience of hunting Italy has been down to hunting a private posted 'game reserve' over in Tuscany. Outside of the fence, hunting struck me as being a bit of a jungle.

Areas seem to be controlled by hunting clubs - but in law individuals have access to ANY non posted ground - in season. Venison prices are high and thus poaching is rife.

Lovely weather, radically different terrain and vegetation - it all makes for a great hunting experience.

Good luck - and having made some contacts - book a return trip.

Hi Rhys. IanF is right; next june hunting season will be closed in Provincia di Ancona (and almost certainly, in the rest of Italy too); over there big game stalking, for roe deer, boar and fallow deer start in august, and driven hunt of boar is allowed in november, december and january. Furthermore italian laws do not allow foreigners tourists to hunt and bear arms in open territories, so you will only be allowed to hunt in fenced areas.
