I have been using an electronic predator caller for about 5 years now, various interaction, mating, distress and prey sounds on an mp3 player then these are amplified to a power horn speaker to give distortion free noises - which in the right situation gets the fox'svery interested. I am now wanting to make the unit remote (mp3 player stops with me, but speaker positioned away off - 100m or so) This is very popular in USA, where hunters use a system called a NADY receiver/transceiver (believe it is used commercialy to set microphones up with video recorders)

What I am after is whether these receivers would work over here before I make use of the strong pound. Are their any laws that would stop me using radio waves for my purpose?

Nightwalker,

there was an article in the ST last week about a .22 Hornet rifle test. In that the writer said he used an elecronic call to lure two foxes out of a covert in "short order". So I don't think you'll have a problem legally where vermin are concerned.

I'm reallyinterested in this though so would be keen to hear more about how succesful you tink it is and what sort of difference it makes to just sitting in a highseat waiting.

Thanks,
FB

FB, you are right in thinking that these calls are legal for foxes (though illegal to use a recording for attracting birds - crows).

The equipment I was interested in was to turn my unit into a remote unit - which obviously would mean the speaker (power horn) is away from my position, coupled with a moving decoy for visual attraction this is a deadly set up for fox's.

If I can figure out how to post pictures I could show you my set-up, I consider the electronic calls another good tool in my "bag" to lure in REYNARD!

Some pictures would be great. Is it one of those jumping balls of fluff decoys that you use?

How far away would you want to have remote controll? You could put the call on look with some dead time to lengthen the file so it would call every 2 minutes or something? Or would you want 100% control on it?

Anything that gets Reynard is a god idea in my book.

Pete you should get one of the special set ups to so you can get better photos.

I remember seeing one of those Warrener type video's years a go. The guy had a tape recoder stuffed inside a kids cuddly rabbit (looked a bit like Hartley Hare!). He set it out a 100m or so waited for charley. It looked ridiculous but seemed to work very well.

Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they are not out to get you....

I have got a "Cass Creek" remote control caller, it works, allegedly from as far as 100 yards, and has a moving sound facility. It is American and apart from a cotton tail rabbits and a fawn in distress, it has things that need ignoring -coyote howling and the like-.. Have I used it ? yes, did I get anything? no. Mind you I have not had a fox all year no matter what I tried, there has been a distinct lack of foxes around us.

If I could get the speaker 100 to 150 yards away from my calling point that would be ample I think.

Havent got the moving decoy yet but yes it is the erratic fluff ball or bundle of feathers that gig around that I am after.

JayB, I too have distress calls etc but very rarely use them. The best call I have found is the adult fox in distress (easy to figure really reynard has a territory, hears another fox in distress - must go and see what all the commotion is about - if wind is right, you are not sky lined etc you will maybe get a chance)
I am mainly calling at night, but with the remote unit and decoy would be using it for early mornings etc.

Would really like to post pics but having a bit of trouble with that!!

I just went tecnical this week and splashed out on a cass creek caller delivered from US with batteries for under £20.
Used it last evening, pup yips, jack rabbit cottontail an all and I had big cubs running about all over the shop...this last hour of daylight.
Shot 2 missed 1 they were coming in from 250 plus yards.
I've been out 6 dawn or dusk times for two foxes prior in last month then I get a cass creek and I get 3 chances in an hour.

Trans

That sounds like a worthwhile investment. The cubs are always easy by comparison to the adults, however, anything that offers an improvement in opportunities has to be a good idea.

I need one of these things!! It's amazing how you can lamp an area regularly and not se a set of eyes, when you know there are foxes on the gound.

How long do they take to be sent over Trans?
I'm really looig forward to getting this moderated rifle for this kind of stuff.

Yep, back of hand is always available (well I use palm of my hand, but thats not important! - whatever works for that person)

What I have discovered over the years is that if time prevails, the electronic calls brings success from "shy" fox's that are not interested in prey distress calls. Also a fox that circles on the wind can be brought to a shooting position by leaving the electronic call in one position whilst I set off to an advantage point with battery pack and wait for it to approach the caller.

Doesn't work every time but when its your profession I believe you must hold as many "ace cards" up your sleeve as possible.

Then there is the night vision equipment.... Wink
